hi peeps,

running xp home on a p4 1.8ghz 256mb 40g hdd pc....

suddenly pc is really slow and i cant reformat yet so to speed it up i tried:-

a) running adaware
b) spy bot
c) defragged using the internal windows defragger

tha above helped somewhat but the last part - defragging did not complete...

could you kindly tell me what other software I can run? or things i can do to speed it up?

also whats the best "freeware" defragger out there??

all help n advice would be much appreciated

thanks in advance...

p.s. ultimately i realise a reformat is best however just want to try everything possible before i go down that road so would really appreciate your thoughts..

cheers!!!

I realise it's not what your asking but a little bit more memory would go a very very long way in improving that system.

EDIT
Actualy looking at your sig I guess you already knew that =)

Yeah give CCleaner a go. Have you tried something like RegSeeker to clean up your registry and remove any dead entries.

And have you done an av scan?

I ran cc cleaner which helped a little but overall i dont see much difference?

do you think a fresh install is absolute necessary?

pls advise

thanks

MSconfig and disable everything you don't need?
Remove any high res apps (like msn live! ) and WMP and replace by low res apps like for example miranda IM or Foobar2000 & VLC.
Use low res browser: not FF or iexplorer 7; either opera or ieplorer 6.
etc...

great minds think alike ;) done it :)

I have run norton and it hasnt found anything? do you think I would benefit running AVG?

Please advise..

P.S. I have disabled any services that do not need to be running and have also cleaned up the "startup"

Thanks

dont use norton for a start it is a killer at startup and ff isnt as bad is if you dont use any addons as addons lead to memory leaks.....

lob winpatrol out and get it sorteddddd you could also increase your swap file size in mycomputer right click properties ..... and change appearance to performance rarther than best appearance

oh revo uninstaller would be a good idea for gettin rd of programs but be careful :D

Better: don't use any AV just common sence, AV's slow down your pc so much, even kaspersky and nod32 are noticably slowing a pc down, with no AV, a pc is flying, although if you get an AV, don't get norton lol, it slows down your pc so much for very poor protection, good luck removing it lol.

every browser has its good and bad points opera is notably faster at startup however it does have a lot more compatability issues and uses widgets rarther han addons whch can be just as memory demanding .....6 and 2 3's all in my opinion better then any ie

This is so true ! Persuade the owner to spend £20 on 512MB of extra ram and that will make so much difference. At the moment he is trying to tow a caravan with a fiat panda !

atm he has 256mb would you suggested an additional 512mb which makes a total of 768mb or just another 256mb stick making a total of 512mb?

pls clarify..

Get O&O defrag and defrag by access. Far better than Windows default defragger.

Registry keys shouldn't make a difference unless you're in really bad shape.
