I moved house a few months ago into a small village. Since getting broadband my connection has been literally non existant...

I struggle to even get an IP and sometimes even sync. I've bought new filters, different routers all updated and using the master socket. My connection just randomly drops and my sync goes to either 0 or 160kbps which makes my IP profile change. Because its so unstable it takes ages to go back up (two + weeks).

The majority of the time rebooting my router doesnt solve this so i have to change filters all the time. A few hours later i dont have a connection and have to change filters again and even then it doesnt always solve it. My line auttention if i sync at 4MB (rarely) is 51 DB and im 6.49 kilometres away from the exchange as the crow flies..

I've asked my ISP if they can change my line to a 2MB line and not upto 8MB but its going to cost me and would like to move ISP's as i feel they havent been providing me with the service i am paying for. Lately i cannot sync any higher than 576kbps downstream and 288kbps upstream

Any help would be great and any recommended ISP's

Im currently paying £20 a month for upto 8MB with 10GB usage

Thanks

Rob

if you just want to move to to another adsl max isp any of the entanet resellers (ukfsn, adsl24, etc) are good, £20pcm 30gig on peak, 300gig off peak, 1 month min contracts

however with your reliability issues you probably want to go with a fixed asdl1 line which you'll only get 2meg but at least it'll be fixed, trouble is iirc it'll be about £30-£35pcm

Have you tried removing the lower half of the master socket and plugging the ADSL modem directly into the socket behind the removed pannel?

Doing this disconnects all house phone wireing past the master socket, which sometimes acts as a huge antenna for extra noise, pushing your SNR over the edge (especially if the phone cables are run close to power cables etc)

pushing the front bottom half back on the master socket is all that is required to put things back as normal (obv remove the ADSL modem first)

May be worth a try, then if this adds reliability, just plug a wireless DECT phone in to the same filter as you are using for the modem, and don't use the house wiring. Or you can ask BT to give you / come and install a replacement ADSL master socket, this connects directly to ADSL and then passes the rest of the cableing through a DSL phone filter, and so the whole house telephone cabling is behind one filter (instead of just the end bits in the room's you plug the filter's into)
(You can bodge your master socket to do the same with a normal microfilter if needbe)

Thanks for the replies :)

My SNR is 15db which is apparently healthy and shouldnt cause any issues with syncing and connecting. I've tried using the master socket without anything else connected... same thing. The house is quite old and the electrics do interfer with other things around the house. I cant really aford for a BT engineer to come out and look at my line if no fault is found.

Im thinking of migrating to falconnect as my friend has recommended them and have good reviews on ISP review
