My Problem:
I currently have a wireless connection, but this has a max speed of 60kb/s (even though its N+), and ive just had to uninstall steam, to reinstall it (without realising it deleted all my downloaded games), so im trying to download my entire catalogue again, but im trying to download it at the fastest speed possible, so ive set up a long gigabit cable running through the house to my router, thinking like an idiot that this would increase my speed dramatically, so i pluged in the lan and duisabled the wireless, and guess what - my download speed is still capped at 60 kb/s.
So i though router problem, so i check that and its currently has a downstream of 596kb/s - so im completly lost - anyone got any thoughts?

I seem to be getting stuck with 10% roughly >.<

Router: Netgear dg834g
OS: Vista Ultimate 64

Hang on, what is your router reporting exactly? If you're seeing a 596Kbps sync rate on your router then yes, 60KB/sec download speeds are pretty much spot on.

Kbps is what your router connection is measured in - kilobits per second
KBs is what download speeds would be measured in - kilobytes per second
There are 8 bits to 1 byte, so a 512 kilobit per second connection theoretically provides a maximum of 64 kilobytes per second download speed.

What is your sync rate normally?

Hello,

sorry for the typo, we're meant to be on a 2mb connection but only usually get a quarter of that, so it was 596kbps!

"up to" 2mbit I expect? It sounds like your line isn't able to handle more than 512k maybe. How far are you away from your phone exchange?

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/checker2.php - enter your details there and then click on 'BT ADSL' and it will give an estimate of the speed you should be able to get.

i'd go with Duke and say its probably that your at your limit for download speed, unless you've seen your download speed faster than that before ???

596kbps is 74.5KB/s, so your speed seems roughly accurate.

Do you live far from your telephone exchange?

And, is the phone cable leading from the master socket in good condition?

Before I moved I had a 7.3mb connection and had good download speeds, but now, yes im now very far from the exchange :(

plus phone line is very stable / good

current data (changed where applies)

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 576 kbps 298 kbps
Line Attenuation 10 db 5 db
Noise Margin 31 db 28 db

My issue is that while my computer and my media center download updates, they both get around 50kb/s/60kb/s each download rate, just wondering why i cant go above on a single computer...

They are misreading, which can happen. If you are connected at 576 kbps then the max you can get WILL be ~60k/s.

Your modem's reporting a very low attenuation and a high SNR margin. Are you sure you aren't on fixed rate 512kbps?

Can't be fixed rate with a 298Kbps upstream. Something odd is definitely going on because with an attenuation that low and SNR that high you should be getting a much higher sync rate. Contact your ISP.

Yes im quite sure, is that somthing on concern??

Er, yeah, you could probably get to full rate.

Can't be fixed rate with a 298Kbps upstream.

It is if you misread a 9 as an 8 :p
Something's very odd to get rate adaption on the upstream; I'd be more inclined to believe the ISP's screwed up and ordered home500 (and a digit's got mixed up) than any real fault.

whats home 500?

Current ISP is orange.

Spoke to isp, they didnt seem to know whats wrong, but they did mention that our line is due for a free upgrade to 8mb next month.....

so anyway,
you say i should be getting the full 2mb and not the 576 im currently getting??
