Hi,

I have a shiny new line and O2 contract. I am supposed to be getting 21 Meg but only get around 8 from speedtest.net. Here are my line stats:

DSL Connection

Link Information

Uptime: 0 days, 0:13:00

DSL Type: G.992.5 annex A

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]: 1,317 / 21,547

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [kB/kB]: 0.00 / 0.00

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]: 12.0 / 18.0

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 4.5 / 10.0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]: 7.0 / 6.5

Vendor ID (Local/Remote): TMMB / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Power (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

Loss of Link (Remote): 0

Error Seconds (Local/Remote): 0 / 0

FEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 193

CRC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

HEC Errors (Up/Down): 0 / 0

Here is my speedtest result:

Plugged into the master and using a filter and using O2 router.

Any ideas please?

Thanks

How long have you had this for? New lines taken 5-7 days to sync to full speed. They "bump", so they go to 5Mb, test for loss for (arbitrary hours value here), if its ok, they go to 7mb, etc etc until they hit a significant loss %.

At that point, they roll back to the previous stable speed an that is your line speed. This is done from the BT Exchange end FWIW.

There is no training period on BE/02 LLU.

Try a download from a site that is well known for maxing out connections? A Linux distro maybe?

Ubuntu downloads at around 600K /second in Firefox.

The line has been active a week and the BB was switched on today.

Thanks

My guess is that you have either signed up for O2's 'Standard' package, or the 8 megabit limit has been applied in error.

Your modem stats suggest you are a stones' throw from the exchange, and I wouldn't be surprised if you could increase your sync rate to the full 24-down, 1.4-up Mb/s achievable on ADSL2+ by decreasing the target SNRM. You might also achieve lower pings by disabling interleaving on the downstream side if you are actually signed up to a 'Premium' or 'Pro' account. *

If you were with BE rather than O2 you would have access to 'Upload Plus' (Annex M) which on a line such as yours could see sync rates of 24-down, 2.5-up Mb/s.

* edit: Looks like I got that last part wrong. Comments on the O2 user forum suggest that it is not an available option. Again, you'd have to go to the BE side of the partnership (on their 'Unlimited' or 'Pro' packages) to take advantage of this.

Spoke to them for the second time now. Apparently the 6-10 day 'settling in' period does also apply to O2/ LLU services. Woman at the other end was very sure of that.

Also download speed now seems to have increased to 1.1Mbytes/ sec, and I am synching to the exchange at 22.5 M/bits now :)

Will try again in a few days time.

We don't usually recommend speed tests, as there are too many factors that are contributing to the result you'll receive; which makes it an unfair test for your line.

Keep in mind the average server is only connected at 100 Mbps, you're asking for a 5th of its available bandwidth, which is a lot.

Best way to try and max out your line would be to start simultaneous downloads, from different UK mirrors or try a very popular torrent (Linux distro for example).

Also keep in mind, although it is an O2 LLU service it is still contended service - you are sharing your line with other users; during peak hours of the day or in heavily built up areas, you will see speed dips and peaks.

Some lines have DLM turned on which they can then turn off but it's not like the BT nonsense it just tests different SNR margins and doesn't limit your throughput. They can also turn it off and usually prefer to.

Be also don't have contention but some exchanges get congested if they don't have sufficient backhaul.

Well I am in Greenwich, about 300m from the exchange, and it's not terribly built up around here. (I think the Poplar one just the other side of the river is notoriously bad).

The only thing is, looking through the Virgin Media thread, lots of people there get 50Mbps down, so clearly the speedtest cannot be that inaccurate?

Thanks

Wireless but 54Mbps of wireless should be OK...

No actually. You'd be lucky to see 20Mbit/sec from a 54g network.

Plug in with a cable and test it again, as you're right you should be seeing more speed.

And I also think the O2 droid was wrong, there is no DLM on Be/O2 LLU lines, and no IP profiling like you get on BT. You should get the maximum throughput available for your sync speed straight away.

Is it consistently slow? speedtest.net often gives odd results but try a few and get an average.
