This is a weird one, my original set up consisted of 2 Samsung drives and both were reported by speedfan, I've had to re-install vista and switched the boot drives around, now speedfan isn't seeing the drives.

Any ideas what I've done differently, anyone?

1) If Raid0 it wont work (cant comment on other Raid's)

2) SMART could be broken in your Mobo's Drivers (example : Smart Status in Nvidia Mobo drivers for Vista is broken).

not raided, these are two separate drives running in IDE mode, same as my previous Vista install where the Smart data and drive temps was reported fine, the only change is to the boot config where the 1TB drive is the boot drive rather than the 500gb drive

Are you using a non-admin account or UAC? In either case, speedfan can't read the SMART sensor data.

Run as Administrator to work around this.

Weird, I have UAC turned off completely and am running as the administrator. I still can't access the SMART sensor data.

Is there a funny way to reboot as admin just in case I'm not in that mode already (I really don't think I am).

Might be a hardware compatibility issue for you then. Speedfan can't read 'exotic' drives - RAID arrays (JBOD excepted), network-attached storage, USB, and the like, or where the system or controller BIOS either doesn't support, or disables, SMART.

Hmm smart is fully enabled and present and selected in the BIOS. Two of my drives are in a RAID 0 array, though the storage drive is not (IDE Mode)

Neither is the status of my external back up drive on a (different controller completely) being read properly.
