After many attempts at using SpeedFan, and failing to get it working with any of my fans, I had a Eureka moment and thought I would share for your reference, and my future reference too.

Before I go to the effort of making a full "How To" I'd like to post details of what I did to finally get fans to change speed, and double check with you that it wasn't a fluke or idiosyncrasy with my set-up.

So, to get SpeedFan changing your fan speeds manually...

  1. Install SpeeFan (obviously).
  2. Make sure "Automatic Fan Speed" is unchecked on the main page ("readings" tab).
  3. Try to change fan speeds by increasing or decreasing the numbers that have a % next to them and little up/down arrows.
  4. If the above doesn't work, click on "configure" the select the "advanced" tab. Change "Chip" to your motherboard chip. Click on each "PWM Mode" and at the bottom "set to" -> "manual" and check the "remember it" box. Repeat for all PWM Modes.
  5. Go to step 3

Please let me know if it works for you. If so, I'll go into more detail on how to have fans react to different temperature sensors. If this isn't working for anyone, I'll try to see what does or what I've done differently.

It's an awesome little program when set up correctly and I wouldn't have bought my Lamptron unit if I knew what SpeedFan was capable of. As I say, if I can settle on a method that works for most people I'll do an in depth guide with images and such and share how I got it running automatically on each boot.

p.s. Having searched on here and Google originally, I found that the information is sketchy which is why I want to create a guide. If anyone has a link to a guide that would save me the trouble, feel free to share!

Speedfan is indeed one of the most infuriating pieces of software I've ever come across.

Over the years I've managed to get some sort of result I'm happy with, but even now I'm not sure how I managed it or even why certain options do/don't work as you'd expect.

I think a eureka moment for me was reading a guide that lead to your step 4. You'd think in this day and age it wouldn't be too difficult to create something with a really simple GUI that you just set sliders on with temp/fan speeds like Afterburner does or similar.

I have it set up with custom fan profiles depending on temp but it took me ages to figure that out.
