Speeding 115mph...

It was a struggle to get a friends Transit (old shape) up to 70mph when all the tools were in the back, never mind 115mph...

Was there not a case where an old Mini was supposedly doing <unknown speed>, the guy proved that the car would not do this speed (runway top speed run or similar), he was then let off? [/vagueness]

115mph? In a Transit? With tools? In a 40mph?

The truck was there to assist the speed run, so the van could get a good slipstream, I think that much is clear. :D

Its crazy to even consider this van was doing 115MPH on this road.

Makes you wonder just how many speeding fines at none silly speeds are malfunctions, imagine getting a fine for doing 40 in a 30 and it been a camera malfunction, a quite easy speed to achieve, yet you proving otherwise would be near on impossible imagine.

Don't go diving in writing OMG YOU LOLZ! on a reply to the police. Your absolutely best way forward is to contact someone like Motor Lawyers - http://www.motorlawyers.co.uk/

Mail them the details, they can sort a chat with a qualified solicitor to discuss the matter further, and then fully handle everything for you. I used them to defend me for a driving offence and was very pleased with the service and result.

Important thing to note, you won't get your money back, certainly not all of it. I think I ended up loosing out several hundreds of pounds even though I was found not guilty. Got to love the system.
 
He phoned the Lancashire Constabulary, they looked at the film inside the fixed camera and said it was a mistake - it went off because of a reflective glow from the lorry infront. He was infact doing 37mph. No problem as I thought.;)

Nice to know that these instruments are reliable and take accurate readings we can trust. Would he have queried it if it was 45mph?

Yes if he was doing under the limit which he was, no point getting fined for no reason.

It could have affected me aswell, as he's a named driver on my insurance, could have made mine go up..

Personally I'd imagine there would be a few people interested in this regarding the reliability of the Gatso device... anyway through something like FOIA and getting written confirmation off them of the error of getting full details off them? papers would have a field day
 
I agree take it all the way, sooner we get rid of these drains on council funds the better.

You are lucky they told you, If it was 45mph, they probably wouldn't off.
Speeding laws are stupid. You have to go to court to get any evidence of them, which if they then prove it you end up with more points and a larger fine.
 
Atleast I learned something from this, keep a big distance from the vehicle infront when going near a speed camera, otherwise this could happen.
 
I can't believe people thought this was remotely possible given the road, the time and the fact it was in a van! :confused:

Wife had a summons for her speeding from Lanc police - in Heysham, she knew she hadn't driven through Heysham for years (even though its not far from us). She just phoned them up, explained this, and about a week later we got another letter saying it was a processing error and no further action would be taken. Seems like they get it wrong a lot.

Fwiw, I bet a 174PS VW T5 will do 115.
 
Sounds like an error to me. But just in case he did it...

If your dad loses his license then can I buy his van off him? I quite fancy a track car :D
 
One of three things has happened here:

- he actually was doing 115, admittedly unlikely
- the camera was faulty and was reading 40 as 115. In which case they'll have had loads of tickets for mopeds and vans doing 115. A quick phone call will sort it out.
- he was speeding, but a faulty camera read it higher. In which case he needs to man up, accept he was speeding and concentrate on proving he was doing 60 not 115 so he gets away with points and a fine rather than loosing his license
