Speeding fines are set to rise following a recent review by magistrates courts. The decision has been made in an attempt to deter motorists from speeding by increasing fines by a further 50 per cent. The harsher reprimands follow the hardline approach taken by the authorities on mobile phone usage while driving, which will see the fine and points tally for both doubl to £200 and six points from 1st March 2017. The new speeding fine rules will come into play from April 24th 2017 onward.

More in the article.

The issue is the "safety" people have a much louder voice than everyone else. So they won't increase the limits, even though it's what people actually want for motorways :/

The Evo Article said:
The current minimum fine of £100 and three points will still remain according to www.gov.uk. What’s more, law abiding citizens with a clean licence may still be able to circumvent the points hit by attending a speed awareness course. Previous speeders will not be extended such opportunities seeing their points total climb further.

So, as you were then.

funny really, it'd be interesting to get some accurate statistics to see what % of the population speeds in various limits.

purely because if, as it may seem, the majority of folks say stick to limits except on motorways, the logical conclusion would be to raise the motorway limits.

a law that isn't adhered to by the population isn't exactly a law for the people is it?

I think the vast majority is 30mph zones. You hardly ever see those camera vans anywhere else, because that is where they rake in the most cash. People don't tend to speed as much on 60mph roads.

Theres actually a road near me where they LOVE to set up a 30mph camera van because the road is on a gentle, but long decline, and you can actually get over the limit easily just by coasting down it, despite this road being of suitable quality that 40-50mph would be easily safe.

I'm not concerned, it's dead easy to avoid getting a speeding fine.

they like to set up 40 yards from a 60mph ringroad near me. It's a long stretch of road coming out of a business park and they sit in the carpark of the sports park catching people going over 30 right before they hit the 60 or people who just pulled off the 60 and still going over 30. So frustrating considering the stretch is safe for 40 or 50 mph and you have to slow down after hitting the 60 for the round about anyway....Then they don't use the usual system and fine people for going 33 or 34 mph. Not the 10% and a couple mph that most coppers use..Literal scumbag traffick cops.

Well that must vary by region then, around here they're almost always on faster dual carriageways. The only 30mph one I see is on a long straight road with fields next to it, driving along there at 30 feels too slow and a lot of people get caught out if they're not concentrating.

The fines are pretty much irrelevant compared to the increased price of insurance/difficulty of getting insured with six points on your licence. For me anyway.

Hmm 6 points for speeding doesn't normally effect it that much.

When I got slapped with 3 points a few years ago my insurer didn't even care. When I phoned to tell them, they told me they only take note when someone "has a string of offences". I was with Greenlight at the time.

6 points for something genuinely dangerous, like jumping a red light however...

At 21, I dread to think what six points would do to my licence. It's difficult enough with a clean one!

Bristol is full of daft 20mph limits which a lot of people ignore if they know there's no camera watching. I wish councils would implement sensible limits on city roads instead of purely focus on safety alone. The 20mph limit in Bristol is due to the old mayor being a cycling fanatic...

Yea and most of the time you see cyclists doing more than the 20mph limit (speed limits include cyclists), while hopping pavements and jumping lights. Nothing seems to be getting done about that :/

Or like I saw in Bristol the other week, a cyclist in the dark with no lights/high vis on, running a red light and calling my mate a hand shuffler because he hadn't seen the cyclist till the last minute.

Speed limits don't apply to Cycles, only motor vehicles. The only offence they can be charged with is wanton and furious cycling :D

Cyclists can be fined for speeding. They also get points on their licence if they have one. The same rules apply to court summons if your X amount over the limit as well :)

The limits apply to "all traffic".
