Speeding motorists where I live, whats the options?

The road entering our housing estate is off an urban dual carriageway where the speed limit is 30mph and just abit further up goes up to 40mph just before you hit a roundabout.

I’ve just had enough today of all the drivers using it as a santa pod style raceway, one car doing at least double the limit if not more than 70mph in the 30 zone.

We usually have a speed camera van around once a week at variable times but it is obviously not enough to put drivers off being speed aware.

I’m thinking of doing something about it before someone is killed. The first thing to do to is write in a complaint to the council traffic office but i’m sure it will be brushed aside.

Has anyone had experiance with a local campaign? Petitions etc

The other dual carriage way into our town does have a speed camera limiting to 50mph but the dual carriage way i’m talking about has busy shops and children crossing the road but no camera.
 
Unfortunately nothing is ever done about these sort of things until someone is killed.

Our government are masters at locking the stable door after the horse has bolted.
 
The only thing I could suggest is recording go pro footage if possible of a few people speeding, then start with contacting your local MP with the footage to make him/her aware of the issue. See what response you get from that, then if unsatisfactory, push on from there.

A motorcyclist was killed but some years ago, does it take a car ploughing into a group of school children to get a speed camera these days?

We had this problem in an area I used to live in. This is how the residents got it dealt with. Maybe have a read for some ideas.

People needing to be killed first is indeed an issue.

From the story, absolute joke.

“The criteria for the implementation of a speed camera is that there must have been a minimum of four KSI (Killed or Serious Injuries sustained) collisions in a three year period within one kilometre of the proposed camera site and two of these must have been as a result of speeding.”

Community speed watch looked like an option until I read the proposed site cannot be within 1.5km of an existing mobile camera position which it would be.

I will start with a letter to the council then I think.

I might upload some dashcam footage too, is there any issue with doing this? My dashcam displays the speed so if a car blasted past me (which they do constantly) can I upload the raw footage or would I have to blur out their numberplate?
 
Around here they seem to have stuck up a load of those signs that show your current speed, in red if over and 'TOO FAST' I guess if you are at a speed where you would get a ticket. Doesn't stop the inevitable people up your bumper though.

Thankfully budgets are tight, so we don't get humps anymore and the old humps are so worn down that you are more likely to go down into a pothole than up over the hump.

The biggest problem on the road right now are the people who do 40 in a 40, then stay at 40 in a 60, then stay 40 in a 30. Infuriating people.

Dunno, but we have a school on ours.
40 limit, down to 20 when the lights flash, plus a downhill with a near-blind corner right at the bottom.
In the years I've lived there we've had several cars crash while doing more than double the limit, including one that went head on into a tree and fired his father through the windscreen (DOA of the Air Ambulance), one that ploughed through five front gardens (also DOA) after leaving the road, and one that slammed into the back of me on my bike.

We had the council monitoring speeds for a bit and their published findings stated the average recorded speed along this 40-limit here was 87mph.
We've only just gotten a Your Speed thing.
 
Things like this really annoy me - they should stick speed cameras down but don't tell anyone in urban areas. Anyone not speeding won't get done and anyone who is pays the price.
We are far too soft in this country to 'offend' people. A dangerously driven car (most who do are pretty ignorant or arrogant) is like owning a loaded gun.

Don't know, yet. All it does is alternately show your speed, followed by a smiley or sad face.
I expect we'll get an update from the council, if they bother to do a post-sign speed monitoring exercise...
I suppose I am a touch more conscious of my speed, now... but then, I can also tell you that it doesn't display your speed if you're going over 59mph. It just shows the sad face.... !!
 
On the road my sister lives on they get chavs bombing it up and down. There are speed humps and traffic calming obstacles already, but it doesn't work. Probably only made it more dangerous actually as there isn't a lot of room and it only made it tighter.

Cameras are only going to work if the car is actually registered and the plates are real (and actually on the car). Many aren't on the cars belonging to people doing this kind of stuff. You need real cops there (the ones in camera vans aren't cops, only contractors) to force them to pull over.

Government shot itself in the foot when they used cameras as money machines, If they had been sensible they would still be hidden and would likely catch a lot more dangerous drivers.
