My brother's a child killer! He got a letter today - he was caught doing 63 in a 30 zone. He's got to let them know who was driving (he has no doubt it was him). He's asking what sort of penalty he'll be facing.

Anyone?

I dont actually know, but I know of someone who got caught doing double the speed limit in a 30 and got a driving ban for 1 year as well as a fine.

i got done doing 58 in a 30. i got 5 points and £50 fine. i was very lucky and appeared in court.

i would say it will be a short ban about 1 month + 6points and a fine.

if he only been driving under 2 years he will have to retake his tests

Yes but he was doing more than double the limit so isn't that a 1 year ban and extras

Not ture. It'll be 2/3 months max I'd have thought. No doubt about it in my mind it should be a years ban etc but unfortunately it won't. Expect a big fine too :)

Appear in court and be as sorry as humanly possible.

On here

its shows a table of past offences and what people got.

For a 26 year old male doing 61 in a 30 he got £360 fine, 1 week ban, £35 costs.

may have been different circumstances

**** isn't it :/

But don't take things like that gospel, it all depends on the judge at the end of the day.

Hmm not enough IMO. Speeding on safe and clear roads maybe, but double the speed limit in a 30 is taking it too far. Should be a years ban for doing that.

Plenty of safe and clear roads with a 30 limit, not knowing any more details it does seem pretty bad, but without all of them no hard judgement can be made.

I've never encountered a 30mph road that is safe for 60mph+

I have for 40mph restrictions, but 30's are more often that not residential and town areas.

I've no idea where he was caught speeding. It was 4:30am on his way to work, but he gets no sympathy from me. He is in construction and needs his licence for the job so I've recommended he throw himself at the mercy of the judge.

there are lots, you must not get out much.

I get out plenty thanks. I stand by my previous comment that there arn't many roads that I know of that you can do 60mph down safely.

I agree there are plenty of roads that you can do 60+ down without much trouble. But they're all in residential areas.

I don't believe that there arn't any roads that are safe but I think it's safe to assume that the ones that are, are in a minority. :)

At 4.30 in the morning, most main roads are safe to do 60 on when empty. Its seriously unlikely that anyone is going to be walking out infront of you and if the brakes on your car are ok, what's the issue?

What would you say is a suitable punishment for around 150 mph, in a 30?

Back in my foolish days (about 2 years ago) I got caught doing 66 in a 30. I got a 42 day ban and a £270 fine. Remember the fine is based on your earnings most of the time.

It's an impossible speed to achieve anyway on B-roads.

Why?
Well... it's not really "impossible".

I ask as if you see a 1 year ban for 60 in a 30 as reasonable, I wondered what you'd see as a suitable punishment for 150 in a 30 :)

You would need an extremely quick car to accelerate upto 150mph on a 30mph road before you come to some sort of obstacle such as a round-a-bout, a junction or even just a corner.

Well IMO someone who manages to do 150mph on a 30mph are suicidal and putting peoples lifes at risk for no reason, they shouldn't be allowed behind a wheel. Because basically the car is being used as a weapon, rather than a method of transport. Indefinate ban.

The same logic would work with somebody who owns a gun. Perfectly safe unless used stupidly. If that person walked around the streets shooting at peoples feet. They should never be allowed to own a firearm again.
