Before people go off on one, yes I was speeding and I accept that but I am curious to know about the error on the ticket. First speeding offence in 20 years of driving.

I was stopped by 2 motorcycle cops this morning and given a ticket for speeding in a 30mph zone (dual carriageway up a hill - never knew it was a 30!)

Anyway - they took my license, copied the details and sent me on my way with a pink ticket (FPN) telling me to pay £60 fine and 3 points at local justice of the peace office within 28 days.

Upon checking the ticket back at my office, they have put down the incorrect registration plate.

Mine is NG55 ***, they have put NG56 ***

I'm curious to know about this error. Having a read on some other forums it appears that if I challenged this in court after the 28 days are up, they could claim that under the "slip" rule , it was a genuine error by the police officer and thus I would still have to pay up as well as possible costs etc.

Anyone got any thoughts or had a similar situation before.

I'm likely just to pay up and be done with it as I was caught but curiosity has me thinking.

Genuine written mistake by the officer.police officer evidence for the speeding still exists,
My advice is to pay :)

Absolutely not. It would go to court if you argued it, the error would be classified as "de minimus", too minor to matter, and would be corrected there. You'd end up paying it anyway.

You have no defence.

Appreciate the fast responses. I'm most certainly not looking for any defence, I was going faster than the 30mph limit so I totally accept that.

I was mainly just curious about the error.

The same thing happened to a mate a few years ago. He went to the company's solicitor for advice and told his only option was told to pay up!

Thanks - just gutted as been driving 21 years and first points ever!

They were out in force as well as there was 2 more on the other side of the same road hiding away behind some hedges. Their motorcycles were well out of the way. Guy just popped out into the road and waived me into the carpark they were in.

I once got off of an average speed camera fine, a front on picture of me in a company branded van doing an average speed of 85mph, only problem is it had the wrong date on it, my company had Perot that that van was parked outside the branch at the date and time of the ticket.

My boss told them this and refused to give the name of the driver, nothing happened from there.

Although in the OP case the actual police were there taking notes so not sure you will be so lucky.

Take it on the chin, and more importantly, slow down next time :)
