Hello all

I was driving past a speed camera which I have driven past for the last 7 odd years and it flashed... I thought nothing of it as I was going slower than I normally do at that particular camera... A couple of weeks later I got a letter saying I had been caught doing 36mph in a 30mph zone... this zone is a dual carriage-way and I normally do 40mph and have never been flashed before...

Spoke to some people and they said:
1. That if there is no speed sign the camera is 30mph
2. The camera has most likely been recalibrated

Is this legal? I say this because the road is one I use almost everyday and was going with the flow of the traffic - as usual. Don't they have to tell us that new tighter speed limits have been setup?

And finally, is it worth taking this any further or should I just pay the fine and get three points???

Are you absolutely certain that the road currently doesn't have any signs indicating a 30mph limit?

Doesnt even need a speed sign if there are lamp posts at regular intervals, it is then considered a 30 limit.

Just because you've never been flashed before now doesnt mean you werent speeding, maybe you've been speeding all along and they've only just set the camera up?

Accept the fine and move on.

just a thought but if the road is a 30 limit, then if you follow said road far enough then at somepoint you will almost certainly enter built up area with a confirmed 30 limit.
if you see a sign before this informing you of a 30 limit ahead then by definition the section of road you're currently on MUST be rated higher than 30.
if not and it just flows into the built up area then the whole road is probably a 30 limit.

I was reading this article about this guy getting a speeding ticket. However, the sign for the speed camera wasn't displayed and he used that to dodge the fine and 3 points and it worked. Can't remember much more unfortunately.

This would only work if the speed limit signage is incorrect. AFAIK speed camera signs are not a requirement.

You will find that all roads are 30 unless otherwise marked. There are quite a few 4 lane road in and around manchester that look like they SHOULD be 40's but arent. The ones that are have 40mph signs at regular intervals and 30 signs whenever you turn off them. If the road you were on didnt have 40 signs then it must be a 30 zone im afraid. Have a drive around and see what signs you can see.

Although there are requirements for a road to be a 30. For example, when entering from a higher speed limit, there must be correctly-placed 30 entry signs. There doesn't need to be repeaters, but there does need to be lamp-posts at regular intervals.

If a road is supposed to be a 30 but is not signed correctly, technically the road doesn't have a speed limit at all.

A lot of useful advice as to possible ways to get out of it.
am i missing something or is there some reason for the name of that site?

seems a bit of a weird choice to me.

/cue three dozen members all pointing out some blatantly obvious hidden meaning of reference that i've stupidly missed.
