I play cod waw a lot online , aswell as a little cod 4 and BF2

Ive noticed the maps load pretty slow on my machine and usually im one of the last to join which is annoying, i dont consider my pc to be overly slow or old tech but maybe theres something i can upgrade that will improve loading times ?

e6600 C2D @ 3.3ghz
4Gb kingstone hyper x 8500
Gigabyte DS3P mobo
640Gb western digital SATA II 32mb cache HDD
ATI 4850 @ 700/1100
win xp x64

I was thinking maybe more ram ? or maybe a quad core or a faster HDD ?

what you guys reckon, whats best to speed up load times ?

I believe an SSD or a fast RAID array will speed up your load times - as its being limited by the speed at which the data can be read off the disk drive from what I remember.

A few basic things can be done to improve things:

- defrag drives
- remove unwanted processes
- manage page file correctly
- use low resource AV software
- Run regisrty cleaner and spyware removal software often

More memory and a faster hard drive will work but an expensive option for just increasing loading times.

BF2 Is pretty limited at what speed you get into the game, and if you load two fast it will kick you out!, I dont see why you would be getting in slow on COD, looks a good setup

Looking at your specs you shouldnt really be loading last ? Puzzling that !
When I play COD I am generally on first and I dont think I have much in my system to improve load times over yours ?? Only big diff with mine is the e8400, Could it be your CPU limiting your load time ?

I found that a much cheaper way to get a fairly noticeable bonus to your load times was to use a second HDD and to keep windows on one and the games installed on the other. If you don't want to fork out for a SSD at current prices or set up your own raid array then it might be worth looking into.

Another option is a faster RPM HDD like the WD Raptor's

get a separate drive for programmes and OS, to the one that you use for games.

get a RAID volume for games.

loading times are to do with your hard drive speed.

thanks for the info guys, i already have two HDDs , windows set up on WD 320Gb sata 2 16mb cache drive and my games installed on the faster 32mb cache drive, do i have this the correct way around ? should windows be on the faster drive or should the games be on a faster drive ?

........... actually ive just discovered i have indeed installed cod waw on the OS driver , where as all my other other games are installed on the dedicated games drive, an oversight on my part lol i,ll move it and see if theres any difference :)

i'll also have a defrag i havent done that for a month or so, apart from that i keep the machine pretty clean running spybot and pestpatrol very often

again thanks for info so far :)

Get vista 64! *hides in flame proof jacket*

Anyway, yeah get vista 64 for its superfetch feature. If you use an application a lot vista recognises this and has most of it pre loaded for when you next use it (poor over simplification but it does help i think).

As said before a 10k raptor or a SSD will also help a fair bit (iv got a veloci raptor as my vista/games drive and i can load maps on things like DoD significantly faster than my flatmates macbook pro)
