Speeding up Windows 7 Boot time

Upgraded (or clean build should i say) this weekend.. Everything worked out very well so far..

Except for my boot time is too long.. It's sits in one spot, in what seems like after initializing the DVD-RW, cos the drive makes a mechanical noise.. Then just sits there for about 30secs doing nothing.. No HD light... As if it's thinking about something.. Then after around 30secs the HD light comes on again and it finishes it's boot..

Went in to advanced boot options and changed amount of processors to 4 but that hasn't done anything to speed things up..

Any suggestions on what I can do to diagnose what it's sitting on and speed it up?

Also installed on my laptop and it flies through the boot up...

Go to msconfig and under the boot menu tick "Bootlog". Restart the PC and when it boots into Windows, go into C:\Windows and find "Ntbtlog.txt". That will show what drivers start and which don't load, which sometimes causes 'hangs' in boots.

I had this exact same problem, black screen with a flashing cursor at the top left, I changed the boot order in the BIOS so the hard drive is the first and only boot device (I can change it to CD/DVD if I ever need to boot from a cd in the future), that fixed it for me.

The obvious thing to do would be to pull the power on the DVD drive then test. Then (if possible) test that dvd drive on another machine to see if it does the same

this is happening before any OS is detected, it's to do with the timeout for AHCI CD/DVD boot time out, I have two drives (will get on to that in a mo), in my american megatrends bios the setting is:

Main -> AHCI Configuration -> AHCI CD/DVD Boot Time Out

mine was set to 15 seconds, hence two DVD drives in my system caused a 30 second wait. I changed it to 5 seconds and the dealy is now only 10 seconds so that seems to be it. I've actually just removed booting from DVD drive from boot order in my BIOS so there is not delay (even though there is a 0 second option for the time out).

Oddness
One of my DVD drives is a sata1 drive, so I understand the AHCI delay on that one. The other is a pata DVD drive on the onboard Jmicron eSata/pata controller, but this too was featuring an additional 15 second delay (Asus p5ke-wifi mobo). Strange that my system considered my pata drive to be supporting AHCI, my guess is its to do with the fact the controller is eSata too.

I think that's what my problem is also.. Can't test at the moment but i will test later and let you know.. Mine is hanging once the animated Windows logo comes on... Just sits there doing nothing, no hd light or anything.

OK my boot problem has not been resolved.

I went into the BIOS and it had IDE already selected, so i tried out ACHI, just to see what happens.. No quicker.. I've uplugged my DVD-RW and 2nd HD from power and signal cable and tried just my BOOT HD on all of the following IDE ENHANCED, IDE STANDARD and ACHI... None of which helps.

My boot sequence is as follows..

BIOS loads, goes through ok.

I get to select which OS to boot up.

The animated Windows logo comes, then it sits there for around 45secs, then the HD light comes on and maybe 10 secs after that I'm into the desktop..

It really is just hanging at that one part and it's doing my head in now.. I think I've tried everything.. Updated BIOS to 2102, clean build of Win 7 Retail 64bit.

If the CD-RW is plugged in, it makes an initializing noise, then after the 45 or so secs it makes another initializing noise, so my immediate thought was it was just taking it's time reading this.. But even with this out of the equation, it still does it.

I'm seriously thinking about going back to Vista right now.

Anyone have any useful suggestions.. I'm off to a bad Win7 start.

Other than the frustrating boot time, it runs absolutely fine.. (as did Vista for me though)
