One of my mates has just found a nasty letter on his mat telling him he was speeding.

It says he was doing 69 in a temporary 50MPH speed limit (Motorway Roadworks - Unmanned camera)

He received the letter today and he was caught speeding on the 12-May-2006. Have they taken too long to contact him?

What would be the best thing to do 'In his intrest' ?

Cheers all

and with RM bringing you the letter it means they can get away with sending the NIP a month or so late:o

na, word around the camp fire is that 90% of the time it takes 2 weeks for it to come through, but can take up to a month.

If it's longer than 17 days and there was no trouble finding out who the owner was then there is good ground that you can get off by the NIP being out of date.

They have a reasonable time to get it to you, this means first class post not second class as well.

I would point you to a website that can help you but I've forgotten it :D

It must arrive within 14 days of the offence, unless the vehicle is a company car or loan vehicle which requires the driver to be traced. Also the NIP must be posted with the expectation that it will arrive within the 14 day period, so NIPs dated on the 13/14th after the offence can not be posted with that expectation.

More information in this thread on Pepipoo.

17days :)

I'm currently waiting on a speed ticket :o

The two weeks is up this coming Monday. I'm going to leave it until next Friday though to be sure with it being a bank holiday and stuff.

*Humps a tree for good luck*

:D

If he's the registered keeper and it only arrived today it's been way too long. Tell him to get over to pepipoo.com and post on their forums.

Ahh, the use of the PACE document in lieu of signing the NIP. That information has been covered on Pepipoo for several years with plenty of threads in the forums covering its use.

Check the date stamp on the letter - if it was posted within 14 (or is it 17?) days of the offence, he'll just have to take it on the chin I'm afraid.

It is also arguable that it should be posted within 13 days, though I don't have the relevant Pepipoo thread to hand.

You mean the thread I linked to in my post above :)

To reiterate, the NIP must be posted with the expectation that it should reach the destination within 14 days. If the 14th day was a bank holiday Monday, it wouldn't be good enough for the NIP to be dated on the 11th day and then posted at the end of the day. There is no way that it would be expected to arrive within 14 days.
