Can police with cameras catch you with a gun on a bridge?

there was no van, just a man with a gun and a car in front of me. If so what are the fines?

Police with speed guns tend to have a bit more discretion than camera vans as well. I've gone past several over the limit and never been pulled.

Surely if it was a guy with a gun, unless you got pulled over further down the road you will be fine? Don't understand how you couldn't be...

Might of just been a speed safety survey if it was just someone sat at the side of the road/bridge. I've been past a few.

There have been people on here that have been done by what they thought was a gun and received a NIP in the post which would require photos in contested, so yes.

Really? What else do they do? Do they take photos now or something?

Some of them have a built in camera which records continuous footage with an overlay of the speed/distance. The footage is then watched back at the police HQ, and they send the NIP from there. It's not that common though as far as I'm aware.

Unless you were doing speeds you are probably fine, in which case you will get a summons.

They are more for show if he is on a bridge, if they had any intention of doing anybody it would be a camera van.

Most if not all now have a built in camera for still pics and video if they are hand held. The scamera vans have a separate camera on the side of the unit but they are still linked. Not much point using a laser detector without a camera built in for evidential pictures/video. Only the handheld radar detectors that are no longer used didn't have a camera built in but the vehicle has to be stopped at the time to show the driver the reading.

If the OP was speeding and he could see the operator they were caught by the gun. The operator can make a note of the registration if needed like they used to do with motorbikes travelling towards a camera van. They will still have a picture of the car and driver.
