Speedlimits and tailgaters

Urgh baby on board signs are the most ludicrous things on the road. There's human lives in every car, it's completely irrelevant whether one dribbles a lot and craps themselves constantly.

If the lorry behind is getting too close for your little precious *********'s comfort, you should do what every other driver should do and pull over. Acting sanctimoniously because you think other motorists should behave differently around you does not help and does nothing for safety. If you were actually bothered about safety rather than trying to prove a point you'd have just let him past

Like I say, if you had ANY consideration for safety then you'd have let him past, simple as that. Like I said earlier in the thread, you alone are responsible for creating a safe space around your car. If the only way to do that is to indicate, pull over and get on your way without any real hassle then so be it. You're not on the road to prove a point or take a dig at people's driving credentials - you're there to get to your destination as safely as possible. Your actions were not the safest course of action, for yourself or your daughter. The need to let him past was completely evident, what on earth does "he should know better" have to do with it? What an absolutely ridiculous mentality especially if you're trying to wrap your argument in a thin veil of safety.

And no, your daughter's life is no more valid or important to me than yours, or the driver of the lorry behind you - sorry. Your daughter is the most important person in the world to you, rightly so - were sort of genetically programmed for that. But her life carries no special meaning to me and shouldnt to any other road user, a life is a life.

Still doesn't mean it is safer to go 20mph over the speed limit unless I'm missing something? Which roads in London incidentally?

I agree that there probably isn't a 30 road where most people do 50. That seems like a massive exaggeration from the poster.

But there are carriageways with multiple lanes where the speed limit is set very low. 30 where people drive 35-40 and 40 where people drive 45-55.

The A13 towards central london is a good example. NSL upto the M25. 50 soon after (people generally drive 50-60 so not too bad) then for various reasons drops to 40 and then 30 as we pass the North Circular and get towards the Isle of Dogs and then the Limehouse Link. This is a multi lane dual carriageway.

The A12 Norther Approach again is 40 but the traffic flows with the shape of the road, where for large parts means driving above 40. If it wasn't for speed cameras I'm sure parts would be a solid 50+, where traffic allows.

I get that people will drive over the limit on large roads, but asim said it is safer to drive at 50 than at 30. I'm not entirely sure how that works.

I use the A12 and A13 from time to time (I live in SE London) and I know what you're saying. Even the A2 goes from NSL to 50 and then lower. However, you just slow down, even if it is a dual carriageway or 3-way carriageway. Because people are incapable of sticking the limit doesn't mean it is unsafe to drive at the speed limit.

I agree it is frustrating to have some very slow limits which seem daft for the size of the road. Completely get that. However, if it's a 30 and everyone's driving at or around 30, I don't see why it is safer to drive at 50 as asim pointed out.

No I agree entirely, some places 20mph are daft. Small side roads and residential roads, sure. A roads and main thoroughfare roads... not convinced!

Ignore those behind you. I sit at the speed limit and if they get to close i just slow down till they get the message. Failing that just tap the brakes to make them aware. Annoys me because i have a baby on board sign too. Worst offenders are truck drivers. Once stopped on a incline in the wet on purpose because of a truck driver really tailgating me to the point i couldnt read the reg plate. Needless to say it took him a while to get going again. Well he might think next time.

So you put your child at more risk by engaging in road rage or causing an accident, bravo.

You do realise the actual reason for those?

Just raises awareness in the event of a rta that there may be a child trapped in the back

That is so ridiculous, it's even worse than the concept that it should change other drivers behaviour.

There's plenty easily visible evidence that a child might be in the car - the size of modern baby seats make them difficult to miss! I see absolutely no reason that would be of any benefit plus they hamper visibility

Literally no purpose... if you have a window you can see out of, sticking big things to it hampers visibility. You're pretty good at using completely irrelevant statements to back up points - what on earth do vans not having rear view mirrors have to do with it?

Do you take it out when the baby isn't in the car? Hate the thought of some poor fireman going back into a burning car looking for a child that isn't there :(
