Something spooky going on... Did a long journey in the car yesterday and all was fine, just taken it out now to the barbers and I didn't notice anything on the way there but on the way back I could tell the speed didn't match my revs. Turned the car off and it sits at 10mph!?

How would this happen?

How can I fix it? ('05 Mini)

Can't guarantee this will do anything but most cars have a self test mode which sweeps all the needles back and forth a few times for testing purposes. This might reset it and allow it to sit at zero. Have a search for your particular model of mini and you should be able to find out how to activate the cluster test mode.

There is a one of these on the mini and it does a full check of everything on the dashboard. YouTube will be your friend here. I did it one mine about five years ago.

If this doesn't reset, could be an issue with a sensor as above.

Yeah you need the dash sweep using the key and trip reset method. I'll see if I can find my notes.

Might just be that the needle has slipped a bit though its not something I've seen before myself

The IKE has 21 test functions you can access by holding the trip button down while turning the ignition key. Press briefly to advance through menu options, press and hold to access that option. Tests 1&2 are always unlocked, Tests 3-21 are locked. Test number 19 is the "Unlock" function for getting to the rest of them.

Try subtest 2.0 (hold trip button, turn on key, press repeatedly to scroll up to 2.0, then hold). It runs a test that activates all gauges, LED's, and indicators.

(I just grabbed somebody else's post)

Check that the gauge reaches its zero point during the sweep test and if not you might be looking at a new speedometer. I've not tried to open one up so I couldn't tell you if it was repairable.

Thank you for that. I went to give it a try and all I did was turn the key to position 1 to roll the windows down a bit, then when I turned the car off again the needle has reset back to 0mph! :)

So all fixed nice and easy, I hope it doesn't happen again.

Thank you all for the help :)
