Speedtest slow results?

I am paying Tiscali for 8Mbps. My rubbish phone lines connects at 5.9Mbps.
Then why do i only get this result below? 1Mbps.......

I have a Thomson Speedtouch 330 ADSL USB modem.
Would changing to a wired ethernet modem be better? ( i.e. not a USB one )

Yes. Pluged it in to main socket on the wall. Same result.

Yes, an ethernet modem would probably be an improvement, though Speedtest.net is by no means a reliable test.

P.S. When i download stuff i can only hit about 120kB/s

I'd say you'd see a bigger difference by changing ISP. Tiscali is well known for rubbish download speeds and generally as a pretty mediocre ISP.

Any idea on a good ISP? I only get ADSL MAX. No LLU service or cable. Don't want Wireless.

Tiscali is definately slow. I moved away from them last week and instead of getting just short of 1meg i am now getting just over 6 meg with o2. I can see a big difference and are very happy with o2 ,fantastic service.

120KB is what I was on back when I was on VIrgin's 1MB package... I was so excited to move from the 512K to 1MB I switched in the first week or two when it first was available
