SpeedTouch 585 wireless issues

Hi there,

I recently purchased a SpeedTouch 585i V6 from OCUK but I'm having a bit of trouble with it.

Every 24 hours, give or take, the wireless stops working. The signal strength is good but then all of a sudden the wireless drops and I won't be able to connect to the network again unless I reboot the router.

When this happens I can connect to a neighbours unprotected network (just to test mind you) and so i don't think it's a problem with the wireless PCI/PCMCIA cards I'm using. But I cannot re-connect to my SpeedTouch until I reboot the router.

I have tried different firmwares, resetting back to defaults and then setting it up again, tried different channels as well. Not sure what else to do.

Does anybody have any thoughts? It's a pretty annoying problem. I'm ok personally as I'm connected via patch cable but the rest of the household moan at me when the internet goes down as the other two PC's are connected wirelessly.

Thanks in advance.

BTW my WLAN LED is always orange when the others are green. Is this normal?

I think the orange means your security settings are not great i.e. WEP or none at all. When using WPA it goes green IIRC - I'm sure I read that in the manual.

About the wireless problem - I have no idea. Do the wireless stations still retain a connection i.e. the windows icon is normal without an X through it or does it properly drop out?

so your PC functions fine with the cable, and you can surf the net ok, it's just the wireless clients that have lost connection? And then you can't reconnect at all?
There's a new version of the firmware that came out about 2 weeks ago I think. Have you tried the latest one? Might be worth upgrading and trying it out. It's been working fine for me, and I've been staying connected for over 24 hours. Firmware

Does your router still display in the wireless networks screen after the problem has occured?

Also, might be worth doing a factory reset after you've applied any firmware.

Smids: Yeah, you're right about the LEDs, I should've known that. I switched to WPA and it went green. I've had to go back to 128bit WEP though as the wireless PCs can connect but can't see the net or ping the router if WPA is enabled. :S It doesn't really matter though, I live in a rural area and only one person has another wireless network around here.

Also yep the wireless icon in the taskbar has a nice big X through it when this happens so it drops out completely.

gsf600y: Yeah, my PC's fine connected via cable, but the wireless PC's lose their wireless connections every 24 or so hours and cannot reconnect to the network unless I reboot the router. One that's done, they automatically reconnect again.

I've tried the latest version on the speedtouch website and a couple of older ones I found, but the firmware you linked to seems to be newer so I'll try that.

And yep the router still displays in the wireless networks screen, the signal is good and I should be able to connect to it but it doesn't happen. Says something about "Cannot detect network type" and/or it just sits there trying to connect for ages with the bar going across time and again.

Thanks.

Nothing seems visibly changed.

Get it from : http://m8s-rates.com/speedtouch/routers/585v6/

(not the HP [High Power] as this is only for US models).
