Can anyone help me with my router woes?

My Speedtouch v585 routers is driving me a little bit mental at the moment.

It has been working fine for ages but now has started to mess me around and I don't really know where to start with it.

The set up is quite simple

I have my main computer connected directly to the router with a network cable.

There is another network cable routed through to my bedroom to the uplink port on a Dlink network hub to which I have connected both an original xbox and an Xbox 360.

The Xbox has a static ip address set and works fine. The 360 was having problems when I first set it up using DCHP, it could see the network but the router was not allowing it to see the outside work. In the end I had to set a static ip address and eventually the router allowed it to see the outside world and now it's working fine.

I also have a WDTV Live connected with a network cable which seems to work fine too.

Also connected, via wireless are my netbook and my phone.

My phone (HTC Desire z) I had to manually setup, inputting a static ip address, and entering all the gateway addresses and DNS addresses as using DCHP it would connect to the network fine but not see the internet.

The netbook has been working fine since the day I got it, over a year ago, using DCHP until last night when I switched it on and got a "limited or no connectivity" message. I clicked on the properties to try to repair the connection and it failed when trying to renew the ip address.

After I switched the router and netbook off and back on, the netbook connected fine again.

This morning to give it a test again, I booted up the netbook and again got the "limited or no connectivity" message and no internet connectivity.

I switched off the router again and once again the connection problems went away.

Now, I don't have a huge amount of networking knowledge (just enough to get things running when everything goes right really), so please bare that in mind, but from my use of commonsense, it seems to me that the DCHP part of the router is failing after some period of time.

When I was trying to set my phone up to use the wireless, it would connect to the network but have no internet connectivity, if I switched the router off and back on it would work for a little while but leaving it over night, and trying in the morning it failed again, the same seems to be happening now with the netbook.

The problem is clearly something to do with the router right?

I could setup a static ip address for the laptop which will probably work but in an ideal world I'd like to get DCHP working properly as at the moment I have had to set a static ip address on my phone which means I can't connect to the wireless network at work, or anywhere else which uses DCHP.

Does anyone have anything thoughts about what the problem might be (id the DCHP crashing, or just deciding that something isn't right or something?) and how I might get it working?

Ideally I would like to avoid having to buy a new router if possible!

Thanks in advance.

Which version of the router do you have ? (its on the bottom of the router I believe)

Which version of firmware are you using ?

re: Xbox360 - I was told the best way of setting this up was DHCP and to allocate the external IP address to it, so it was basically DMZd. Then you get an OPEN status on Xbox live

I'll have to have a look at the router version number and firmware this evening.

From my googling this morning it seems that there were reports of flaky DCHP with the router back in 2007 or so, guess mine is discovering this problem now.

I did find one thing very odd though. When I was using my old phone (a SE W705) to connect to the wireless it had no problem what so ever and I didn't even have to log into the router to get it to work, I just entered the security code and off it went without a care in the world.

Also I'm puzzled as to why the netbook is suddenly having problems, it was perfect up until yesterday....

Right, I'm home now.

Router is a ST585 v6

Software version is 6.2.16.3

Netbook again not connecting properly this evening, and trying to repair the connection fails at the renewing IP address.

Having restarted the router again, the netbook is now working again.

Looking in the routers gui, the ip details of the netbook are now correct and indeed are on the netbook whereas previously the ip address it was reporting was something completely random.

However I've just noticed that on the router, the ip address it is reporting for my phone, which is currently using a static ip address as it refused to work with one assigned by the router, is completely wrong, it should be showing 192.168.1.77 but is showing 10.81.12.148

Any one got any ideas as to why this would be? BTW internet on the phone is working fine.

I really don't understand why things are not working, nor how I go about fixing it/getting it setup correctly.

Any help really would be appreciated!!!

After an evening of googling, I still have no idea how to get things working properly.

Any help or even just pointing me in the right direction would be really appreciated.
