Speedtoutch & other routers DMT Tool tweak guide

A quick guide to tweak your speedtouch or another router for that matter, (although you will have to download a different DMT tool version but the principal is the same)

1: Download and install DMT Tool version v7.31, Extract the DMT file and drag onto desktop, (No install needed)

2: Run the program and Select English.

3: The program will look like this below:

4: In the connection establishment box you need to enter the routers username & password, mine is the set as default so my username is Administrator and no password,

5: Hit connect and it should receive data from the router which will look like the following

6: This is now tweak time :) Select special on the menu bar then Misc. Options, then click the box which say 'unlock experimental area' and hit yes, then save and close, There will be 3 new tabs next to Info 1 2 & 3 this is called modemoptions,

7: Click on the modemoptions tab then you will see a big slider with Target Noise Margin down the side, this is where you tweak the SNR

8: Where it says Default SNRM uncheck the box, this will override the default target which mine was 6Db, now you can move the slider down which lowers the SNR I would recommend to lower it by 2 to start with, click apply/resync then Reboot/Resync this will then reset the router and get new info from the exchange, (It will take 1-2 mins for this process) hopefully the SNR will be dropped resulting in a higher SYNC speed, It will update the graph automatically so you don’t need to press connect etc just be patient :)

9: Hopefully DMT tool would have done its trick and lowered the SNR, you can check this in the Downstream and upstream boxes,

10: Just repeat step 8 if you feel you can get more out of you line, I've left mine sat at 3.5Db I wouldn’t really recommend going any lower as you will see quite a lot of errors and resyncs.

Just a quick note: The speedtoutch 780 saves the SNR which you tweaked in DMT tool when the router gets turned off or resyncs, My old Belkin router didn’t save this which I had to keep on setting the SNR tweak myself.

Hope this quick guide helps if I’ve missed any info etc sorry :p just let me know and ill add/update it.

It's worth pointing out that reducing your target SNR margin could leave you with a connection that's less stable (or doesn't sync at all).

Given SNR more often than not fluctuates, it might be wise to reduce the SNR margin, wait a period of time (>24 hours would be best), and see how stable the connection is.

With Max, you might find that a) the change in sync rate isn't immediately reflected in an increased IP rate and b) you don't get any increase in speed.

Yep that’s perfectly true tolien, with ADSL 2+ which I'm on with Be* has no IP profile so the SNR tweak will work straight away as there’s no waiting for the profile to raise also I find the SNR a lot more relaxed On ADSL 2+ it doesn’t fluctuate compared to when I was on AOL 8meg that would raise and lower as much a 4-7dbs

i have been using this tool for months and have squeezed 19MB out of my 16MB connection with bulldog.

I generally leave my connection at around 18.5MB as this seems to be the best in terms of performance and stability.

thepharcyde you can’t actually improve your speed, you are syncing at the full 2Mb, as for the SNR tweak it looks as though your router doesn’t support this feature, have you unlocked the experimental options area?

It looks as though you would need to use telnet in the cmd prompt to change SNR values on your router, maybe this thread is worth a read

cheers will have a read, nooby to all this :)

No problem :) I've had a lot of experience using telnet and command line to change router settings etc, my 2 old Belkin routers wouldn’t allow me to change my SNR with DMT Tool so I had to use telnet commands, such as 'adsl configure --snr 5' and so on, although your router looks more difficult judging be that thread

ADSL doesn't have an IP profile either - it's only BT's implementation (and the fact that most of BTw's network uses ATM) that does.
Without all the profiling and DLM that goes with Max, you can at least play around a lot more.

ADSL 2+ it doesn’t fluctuate compared to when I was on AOL 8meg that would raise and lower as much a 4-7dbs

It's possible that's Seamless Rate Adaption in action. The sooner BTw start offering ADSL2+ the better, for exactly that reason.

Some people might find they actually benefit from raising their target SNR, if on MAX and having stability problems (particularly in the evening). I know some people find that a daytime SNR of 10 is fine but when it drops in the evening to 6-7 their connection (not speeds, which could be due to other factors like congestion) becomes unstable.

fothsn, thanks for taking the time out to write the guide!

I've been playing around with DMT Tool for a few hours and both my up and down SNR are at 3.5db, giving me 1,351 / 9,643 which appears to be the most I can get from my line.

Is it not better to have a higher SNR or will this suffice?

No problem Reefa :)

Yes a higher SNR will increase stability and noise interference, I've being quite lucky and managed to decrease mine to 3.5bd although I do get more CRC & HCR errors but not too many, saying that all my sockets and wiring have being replaced so people with old wiring etc will likely see more noise interference and sync problems.

Reefa see how you get on with the SNR @ 3.5db for 24hrs if you notice any sync problems ect just raise it to 4 and so on until you feel the line is perfect, Being on ADSL 2+ is quite a big advantage as there’s no IP Profile so when you lose sync tweaking your line with DMT Tool it doesn’t reduce you profile speed and also updates your sync speed straight away.

Thanks for this...I used DMT ages ago when I first came out, after just running it I realised I had my connection set to ADSL2 so changing it back to ADSL2+ gave me anther 1mb straight away.

What are the bad guys I need to look out from this lot??

FEC Errors (Up/Down):
CRC Errors (Up/Down):
HEC Errors (Up/Down):

yes it can be.

I have recently reloaded this back onto my machine and I can now squeeze another 2MB out of my line so I have had it sync'd at 21MB which is fantastic.

I generally keep it at around 18MB anyway.

Gone from 13.5mb to 15.5mb and no problems so far. Not going to push it anymore as it is at 4.0db ;)

I use this tool daily on my connection. During the day I lower the SNR to its lowest as it doesnt fluctuate during day but when it gets to later in the evening I tend to raise it to about 5 to gain more stability as there are more tone frequencies which affect the connection.
