Hi folks,

Driving myself mad with my current collection of inexpensive/hand me down spirit levels. What's the go-to?

I have a Magnuson 6ft'er which seems fine, do I just keep going with Magnuson or is it worth going for Stabila etc?

Stabila are top tier. You’ll have to pay for them though.

Unless you’re using it all the time, as in daily and it’s going to get thrown about the back of a van that Magnusson set will be more than enough.
 
My long level isn't all that accurate; 2 of the 3 levels are slightly out - enough to be annoying (I know I could stick a shim on it to fix this but instead I bought one of these, rest it on the level and ignore the bubbles).


You can use it for absolute or relative angles plus calibrate it to be accurate.
 
For those buying Stabila, there seems to be quite a difference between their entry level and top-end (price wise). I can see the 600mm comes in £25, £50 or £90 guises.

It is worse value, but like I said, I already have the 1.8M box level from the pack. I assume we believe the build quality of the Stabila will exceed the Magnuson gear?
 
I have the Screwfix version of the Forge Steel ones from before they switched to Magnuson and they've been fine for me as a general DIY'er

Yeah and TBF for the same/lower cost, the Magnuson ones are "box levels" that look more like the top-end Stabilas... and come with a bag.

Yeah, it's the 4 version with a bag i have. Even though i already had the small 30cm version anyway and a 60cm from another brand. The bag alone is nice, just to save them getting bashed around.
 
I didn't think the Stabila was pricey TBH but then I opted for them as my dad has had a set of the standard yellow ones for 50 years and still going strong hence my purchase

They aren't at the lower level; they do basics for around 20 quid. It's when you get drawn in it can get out of control :D

Have a look man....their website is nuts lol. At the top end I think it just hires someone to throw a plumb bomb down for you and squint from a distance.
 
Buddy of mine has the all singing and dancing digital ones, think the 3 of them cost him >£500

He’s got a couple of the laser levels as well. Plus one of those water levels for doing anything over a decent distance outside.
 
Got a stabila 96-2 1800 and sometimes I find myself staring at its awesomeness. I think it’s my favourite tool I own.
 
I you need to level a large distance and don't have a laser, a length of clear tubing with some water in it make a good temporary level.
