Morning all, the missus and I had another shot at capturing splashes, this time with coloured water. We decided we needed a larger splash so we could be further away (hoping for a higher DoF), so opted for dropping a marble into water :-)

Here are some of the results from the first batch - we're very happy with these and have plenty of ideas for improving now that we have a solid base to work from (more light, bigger bowl, etcetc).

How did you light this?

We used a 500w Halogen lamp about 1.5m away (to the right, not elevated - you can see there is shadow cast by the side of the tin because this lamp was too low), with a tin foil reflector on the left pointing some of the light in and downwards.
And a flashgun mounted on the D70 :)

I take it the yellow and green are simply objects lit by the lamp behind the tank? or is that the light passing through the marble?

We added a little green food colouring to the water, the 'yellow' is where there is more light and the colour is weaker.
Finally got you to reveal your secret :D

I eagerly await part 3 of your experiments!
