Splicing VGA cables

Hello,
I need an extra long VGA cable and I have two short ones I'd like to splice together. However once I cut the ends off the wire-colours are not the same.
I wonder, if anybody could help me:
Cable 1:
Thin wires: Orange, Brown, Yellow and Black.
Thick wires: Red, Grey, White, Blue and Aqua.
Cable 2:
Thin wires: Orange, Yellow, Purple, Black and White.
Thick wires: Transluscent White, Blue, Green and Pink.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help my mini project!
Regards,
Tig

EDIT:
Mini project now complete, have a look at my "Frankenstein" cable here.

Not sure if there is any standard on colour coding, you might just need to do a continuity test to check what pin matches what colour.

As much as I admire your tenacity in putting this together, I suspect that in shielding terms you are going to be disappointed - for a fiver ish an auction site would be able to get you a 10m cable - how long does it need to be?

Thanks for the replies guys, this is just some hobby craft to be honest, I need a ~3m cable and I have a 2m and a 1m. I know I can buy one but I thought I'd have a bit of fun with my resources, Ray Mears style - if you get me.

I've worked out the wire combinations and they're now connected, with masking...I mean electrical tape of course...Of this sensitivity and shielding you speak of; can't I create my own shielding i.e. a copper coil/foil?

Many thanks and bare with me :)

Good luck, it will be interesting to see what the video quality is like with this job. Perhaps if you get the opportunity you could let us know the results at various resolution settings.

+1 for keenness to see the results of this frankensteins monster cable!

It's aliiiiivvveeee!!!

I'd love to provide a detailed instruction manual on the subject of splicing VGA cables but I'm afraid the simple answer is: Magic Masking Tape and solder.

Recipe for VGA splicing success:
Take two VGA cables
Carefully cut and separate each wire
Unwrap and trim wires
Match wires together:
This stage involves dismantling the discarded 'plug' ends of the cables and mapping out which wires go to each pin. It helps to literally draw maps out for both cables. An alternative method is to use a multimeter tester on each wire and corresponding pin. I considered this method but found it far too obvious for my liking.
Match and solder each wire together ticking off your diagram as you go. For shielding I recommend masking tape... Wrap the tape around each wire and tape them down out of the way as you go.
Finally add a good dollup of masking tape to hold together all of the wires.
Attach to expensive television and computer with no fear.

Disclaimer: By using this recipe you acknowledge I take no responsibility for the death of pets and/or your expensive TVs and computers.

I've tested the cable at my max resolution of 1680x1050, it works like a brand new cable.

Picture to follow!..

P.S: Thanks for the all the interest :)

Amazing, well done, this has been one of the best threads on here for ages, far better than those "Spec Me A Spec For A Spec...." bollix threads.

I gotta say, I did not think the OP had much chance of success, especially at higher resolutions, however, brilliant stuff, very amusing and great to read.

Massive credit to you for seeing this through, tigjaw :) Just goes to show that sometimes you just gotta ignore all the haters like me, and go with your gut and your soldering iron :) Excellent work :)

Thanks gang :) very much appreciate the technical, moral and comical support and I'm glad you found this as amusing as I did. I didn't quite expect the excitement this topic rustled up!

Lemme know if you ever start your own splicing project, I'd be interested to see the results of say... a HDMI cable for example.

Lol that is fantastic, Daaaveee; you couldn't make it up.

I don't think my life insurance will pay out for this though!
