split dvi/vga signal

is there a device which can split a vga or dvi signal from one output so that it can be displayed on 2 monitors simultaneously?

Yes, but to do it without degrading the signal starts getting expensive. Search for a 'VGA splitter' or 'DVI splitter'.

Depends what you want to do - a dual output graphics card is good to expand a desktop in either clone of expand mode. If you want to render 3d on both then Matrox does the dualhead2go box (or even the triplehead2go).
