It's a British thing, people are borderline obsessed about it and will often make enormous compromises to acheive it. Meanwhile, in France...

Recently split with partner of nigh on 6 years and I am in the same situation. Don't have quite the disposable income left over you have after paying off the bills but I have my own place and a car so am currently content with how things are going. Biggest issue I currently have is boredom when I am not working, which at the moment isn't often.
