Is this possible?

I'm planning on putting Vista on my spare pc and putting XP back on my main rig.
My spare pc doesn't have a DVD drive so I need CD's but I don't want to order them from MS.

Is it possible to split the DVD into bootable CDs?

Cheers

I doubt it. The main install file is an image, which is well in excess of 700Mb. You'd need microsoft to split it for you.

I know on my MSDN-AA they offer it as a download, so it obviously exists somewhere.

Simple answer would be to take the dvd drive from your machine and install in the other, do the install and then put the drive back. TBH dvd readers are so cheap these days that it might be worth buying 1 for that machine as I'm sure it'll come in handy.

Yeah I did think about that.
I do have a USB DVD drive but I'm not sure if the pc would boot from an external drive.
Any thoughts other than to try it (I'm at work at the mo)?

Cheers

RAR it into loads of bits which will fit on a CD and then mount on a virtual drive on the other PC?

I could plug the USB DVD drive in and rip it to an image.
If I mount that I could start the installation from within Windows but would it continue to install after the reboot or would it need access to a DVD?

also, vlite can span your vista disc into cd's

(you don't need to remove a thing that way)

but removing some of the crap and unrequired things will speed it up a bit :)

its in the iso section somewhere, called split or span or something obvious :)

nlite is the xp equivalent (you can make super fast sub 100mb xp iso's with it)
