'Splitter' for internet and PS3 at same time?

A friend was asking me what he needs to do so he can use his internet connection and use Playstation network at the same time.

I didn't know.

I'm sure someone on here will know. He was told he needs to pay £25 for some kind of router. if he needs a router, what do you recommend?

As I say, I haven't a clue.

He probably needs a router, but you'd need to know what type of internet connection he's got.

Yeah, it might of been worth me asking what connection he had beforehand.

He could use ICS, but it's dire and the machine running it would need to be on.

He should have a router then

Should be just a case of running a network cable from PS3 to a spare port on the router :confused:

Haven't got a PS3 myself, but this is what i do with my 360.

Not necessarily - there is more chance he has just a modem.

OP: If you follow the white coaxial cable from the wall, it should go into a box before going into the PC. You need to find out what kit is there to know what to do next. If he has a router, then as pointed out above, he can just connect the PS3 into the router with standard network cable (RJ45) or if its wireless, via wireless if his PS3 came with it. Or he will need a router, e.g. Netgear RP614. The modem plugs into that, and then you can connect up to 4 devices into the router, which will share the Internet over them automatically.

all PS3's are wireless enabled straight out of the box, so if he has a wireless router just let the ps3 detect the settings and type your network key in save the settings and hey presto! if he hasnt got a router then obviously he will need to get one

Assuming a wired connection, wouldnt a simple Switch do the job? Rather than a router?

nope. switch wouldnt be able to process the goings ins and goings out, of the internet / network data.
for one, the switch wouldnt give the correct IP addresses..

I guess he only has 1 IP and therefore needs something to do NAT.

In other words he needs to get a router.
