Splitting a displayport signal?

Hi all

Been going round and round the houses to try and find a decent 1080p 144hz panel with either the red or green sync technology (i currently have a GTX so green would have been preferable)

However i was put off by the DP only on seemingly all g-sync panels so started looking at freesync, but the big thread on here with the AOC freesync monitor has put me off, although the sister panel with gsync appears to get great feedback and is the polar opposite, so i had a brain wave

I have two pc's going into the single monitor, one is for old school games i still use regularly (dvi signal) and my main gaming rig will obviously be DP. I couldn't run the DP signal from my main gaming rig through the KVM as i would lose the sync technology so i was thinking about keeping the KVM for all other inputs (k/b, sound etc) and just switching the target signal on the monitor or splitter itself?

Therefore after my rambling am i able to get a DP splitter to suit my needs and anybody have an experience with one? Obviously i will have to get a DVI to DP cable to go from the KVM to the monitor aswell. Its just really to stop me keep faffing behind the monitor couple times every day to swap cables over!

Many thanks in advance and happy new year to all :)

If I'm reading your post right and you are nudging towards G-Sync then the simplest solution would be to get one of the G-Sync "2.0" monitors and use DP for gaming and HDMI for the non/older-gaming system.

Hi hmm thats not a term i've heard of just yet, are these new panels then fresh on the block then with more than just one input? As the complication seems to come from all the panels i've been looking at only advertising a single input which is always DP! I.e similar situation as the Swift, which i beleive you own one of these monitor? Cheers :)

The new Dell S2716DG has both DP and HDMI - though the HDMI will be limited to a lower refresh.

There don't seem to be reliable DP switching devices that also works with G-Sync or high refresh rates.

Thats a shame. But thank you for your help. The Dell looks a nice monitor, just will be out of budget for me and looking to stick with 1080p for now.

Digging deeper looks like i could possibly go for a 1m DP male to female fly lead from the monitor hanging behind the desk, and crawl under there and plug either pc into that each time i flick my KVM over. Obviously would still need the DVI to DP lead aswell. Not ideal for now but seems to be only way around it, and better than keep dragging the monitor out once i've got it setup in the right and comfy position (ocd gets strong on this one aswell!)

This is too spooky. I wrote almost the exact same question yesterday! I use a 2-port KVM DVI splitter for my gaming and work rigs and want to buy a 1440p G-Sync monitor. As G-Sync only works over Displayport, in order to reach the higher refresh rates that the 144Hz monitors are able to achieve, you need to use Displayport 1.2. The problem is trying to find a 'cheap' KVM switch that supports DP 1.2 !

Hi Storm. Looks like we are both in the exact same boat then, that is spooky eh! My research for getting around this (on the cheap) is to get a male to female displayport lead, around 1m long and getting a dvi to displayport lead for your work pc, still have all the peripherals attached to the KVM, and when you want to switch pc flick the KVM over and unplug/plug in relevant display lead into the hanging umbilical cord if you will lol hanging out the monitor, only problem with this is climbing under the desk each time as for me anyway the male to female DP 'fly' lead i will leave hanging down the back in the foot space. This way it atleasts save keep dragging the monitor out to plug different leads in all the time. Sounds great in theory, but i have obviously not tried in practice yet and whether these extra cables will all get along eith eachother but i can't see why they wouldnt? Unless any other knowledgable person can think of a reason why?

My second pc is actually really old school and is playing old games like Quake and UT99 so is only running Radeon 9800pro lol, so could the dvi signal from a 15 old AGP gpu be transferred into a DP signal into a 15 year newer monitor by the means of a simple passive DVI to DP lead? That is the question!

Had the Dell still been at £429, I was about to buy it and simply attach my gaming rig directly to the DisplayPort and my work laptop to the HDMI via a DP to HDMI converter and leaving everything else (USB and sound) connected to my existing KVM. Switching between systems would then just require a quick change of source using the screen OSD and a click of the KVM switch. It's as elegant as I can get until I find a cheap DP 1.2 KVM, but even then I'm a little concerned that G-Sync data may not get transferred.

Go DVI to HDMI and plug it into other port as I was going to do. That way you don't need to scrabble about switching cables
