Is there any free software that will allow me to split an A0 drawing into segments then print each segment on an individual A4 page without loosing any detail.

Cheers

The GIMP can probably do it, but I don't know exactly how.

If I were using Photoshop, I would add vertical and horizontal guidelines at 50% of the page, crop each section and save file individually.

If it's pdf, you can do that direct from acrobat in the print options, can even adjust the overlap amount to make it nice and easy to put back together one printed out.

I'm sure I can do it in acrobat, but only got version 5 here at home, and can't seem to do it in that. I'll have a look at work in the morning where I've got version 8, I'm sure I can do it there!

Ok, now at wo0rk

I have Acrobat 8 Professional.

To print a large image across multiple sheets:

1) Open Image

2) Select File > Print

3) Select your printer and paper size using the properties dialog for the printer

4) In the Acrobat Print Dialog box, under page handling use the drop down menu and select 'Tile Large Pages'

The print preview will then show you image and how many pages your image will be split into.

Below where you have selected Tile Large Pages there will be two options boxes.

The first is Tile Scale. Use this is you want to enlarge your image further

Next to this is Overlap: you can change this to change the amount of overlap there is on each tile (this can dramatically change the number of pages if it is just fitting into a certain amount and you increase the overlap, so make sure to chek the number of pages below the print preview.)

Beneath these options, there are two check boxes, Cut Marks and Labels, again these can aid you in putting your printed image together, but again these can dramatically increase the number of pages used.

Hope this helps.
