splitting a file in two

I have a video file on my computer but it is about 200mb odd bigger than my blank disc. So is there a way (a free of charge way) of splitting the file in two so i can put it on two seperate discs

what is the video of? and how long is it?

might be better idea to recompress it..

if it's under 90mins long, you could easily compress it to 700mb without any noticable quality loss using autogk

or you could use 7zip to make an archive of it, which you can set it to split at say 700mb

i'm not sure, all i know is it's 884mb. I have compressed it (from properties) but that only saved 4m which i thought was pretty pointless as i lost quite a bit of quality, so i un-compressed it. I need it down to 700mb or split in to two sections. Thanks

Can you not put it on a blank DVD instead of a blank CD? Or am I missing something?

yes but i was just wondering wether it could be put on 2 cd's to save me having to go out and buy blank dvd discs

For the effort of splitting or recompressing, you might as well go buy some blank dvd's you can get 10 for £3.99 these days.

Get virtualdub mate.
It's free, and I can garuantee you, that you can compress that most likely to easily half, using the divx codec

find out how long it is (only takes a second)

A home video is probably still very much in its raw format and it should easily compress to a smaller file size without losing quality. And definitely use a divx or xvid encoder to ensure quality. But you have ot make sure your DVD will support those file types.
