Rules around the use of spoilers

The moderation team has identified that there is no set standard for users to hide spoilers. This inconsistency means that we continue to receive RTMs from users who complain that they visit threads about movies and TV shows that have been spoiled by careless posters. Several high profile threads such as the Game of Thrones thread have its own sub-set of rules and we appreciate that having different standards across the forum is not only difficult to follow but it is difficult for us to police.

Use of spoiler tags

Anything that spoils the series, film, or hints at what happens is classified as a spoiler and should be labelled as such. As a general rule, if you are unsure that what you are about to post may be classified as a spoiler, use spoiler tags.

Therefore, with IMMEDIATE EFFECT we are establishing the following rules in Music, TV & Box Office:

Movies
  1. Threads created with the intent to discuss plot spoilers MUST be clearly labelled during creation e.g. "warning: spoilers" in the thread title
  2. Spoiler tags are NOT REQUIRED in a dedicated spoiler thread where there is ALSO a dedicated non-spoiler thread
  3. In the absence of a dedicated non-spoiler thread, spoiler tags ARE REQUIRED for AT LEAST 14 DAYS after the UK cinema release

TV Shows
  1. Spoiler tags are NOT REQUIRED when discussing shows that have aired in the UK already, INCLUDING early morning i.e. 2AM showings on Sunday nights/Monday mornings.
  2. Spoiler tags whilst discussing book spoilers, casting spoilers and anything other than events that have occurred in an episode that has aired in the UK are STILL REQUIRED. You should also indicate the nature of the spoiler (e.g. book spoiler, casting spoiler, etc).

General Guidelines
  • Keep discussion of spoilers in the relevant forum until it has been shown in the other country e.g. this will normally be in the US sub-forum until the UK has had the episode aired but the reverse will apply if necessary.
  • No discussion whatsoever of how to acquire episodes unless you are highlighting a legal source in the UK e.g. iPlayer, 4od etc. If you have any doubts about the legality then either don’t post it or contact a moderator and wait for a response.
  • Any spoilers posted in the US thread must be in spoiler tags.
  • Anyone posting gifs or images from a recent show must put them in spoiler tags.
  • If posting gifs/images or other spoilers in a thread which isn't directly related to the show then the spoilers must be in spoiler tags and the show must be labelled so that those who are curious have a chance of avoiding them at least.

Any breaking of the above simple rules will result in infraction/suspension, any further transgressions will result in increased suspensions and may ultimately result in removal of access to those sub-forums.

The aim here is not to spoil the fun but to make sure that people have the chance to enjoy the show and to find out the storyline for themselves without others ruining it for them. Everyone has a part to play here as it also relies on posters helping the moderation team and using the RTM function to report instances where the rules are being broken. We reserve the right to implement a strike system similar to Speakers Corner, if the situation does not improve.

Added 01/02/2022

Spoiler tags are REQUIRED for the first 24 hours when discussing shows that air exclusively on Streaming Platforms (e.g. Disney+, Netflix etc).
