Hello all, think it might be my first time posting the SC forum, so take it easy on me :D

Basically, I'm looking for a set to listen to (primarily) spoken word with. Now, I was thinking open-backed would be better, for a more natural sounding sound, and it also means it will be easier for me to hear if the door or phone or something goes off too...

My price range is in the area of around £100-150, and I have kinda narrowed it down to the Senheiser HD598se, and BeyerDynamic DT990 pro. I'll be using them with a little dot MkI+ on the desktop, and a Fiio e10 on my laptop or phone/tablet when out and about.

Anyone have any 'phones exclusively for spoken word? what would you recommend?

Many thanks :)

The 250 ohm DT990 Premium is currently only £125 on the rainforest if you want a Beyerdynamic.

Personally I find the highs too hot for my liking so would prefer the more laid back HD598se

My current personal favourite in that range is the Sony MDR-1A but it may have too much low end for spoken word.

Well for me on the rainforest the 990 is only 114 and the senny was 99 but ibthino its gone back up now, flash sale. Either way, I was leaning to the senheisers due to the supposed harshness of the beyers

Hmmm how's the mids on those Sony's in your experience? I don't mind it if they are a bit warm as long as they don't mush with the low end. I'm not too fussed about the top end as long as they arent super bright.

I'm currently on AKG K501 (I think) and I'm happy with them but I find them a bit harsh on the top sometimes.

The Beyer DT990 Pros are £114, whereas the Premium is £125, which is something like £100 less than they normally go for.

The mids on the MDR-1As are slightly warm but they really do have a LOT of bass, specially coming from AKGs.
