Spot checking for faults - at my wits end

This is the post i've been spamming around several tech forums over the last couple weeks:

"First, my specs (Self built);

Core 2 Quad Q9550 OC'd to 3.4 (Temps; 27 average idle, 59 average prime95 torture test)
Corsair 800mhz DDR2 XMS2 8GB
Asus P5Q-Pro
Nvidia GTX280 1GB
Zalman 750w PSU
Antec 1200
Windows 7 64bit RC

Before posting here i've checked everything I can possibly think of, right down to opening my machine and checking all the wiring and a reformat. All drivers, directX etc are up to date.

Basically, during two games that I know of, simply executing them causes my machine to lose power, as if someone yanked the cable out. These games are STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl and the recently released Darkest of Days demo. When I lose power, my machine then starts up on it's own and i'm asked whether or not to boot normally or in safe mode.

Back when I built my machine in January, STALKER would do this maybe 5% of the time, and at random intervals, but was still playable (I was on Vista 32 at this time). Now, I get a glimpse of the menu screen before losing power.

Darkest of Days cut off instantly the first time I executed it, the second time I managed to play it through and have it cut off at the end credits, the third time I got past the menu and into loading the first level, and now it cuts out immediately. The only time it doesn't cut out, is sometimes it bugs out on me and opens in a tiny window (maybe 640x480) and during this time I cannot click or interact with the program in any way, but it doesn't cause my machine to pack in either.

Any google search I try simply yields people who are losing power due to using systems that are too weak to cope with the game they're trying to run, having insufficient cooling or an insufficient power supply.

I should also note that I can quiet easily run every other game I own on this machine with no problems (Half Life 2, TF2, CSS, DODS, Empire Total War, The Last Remnant, Velvet Assassin, Wolfenstein, Mafia, Max Payne, Company of Heroes, Call of Duty 4/5, Bioshock, GTA4, Crysis etc) so I believe I can rule out any hardware problems or surely they would present themselves in these games.

Any ideas?"

After many responses, none of which worked, I concluded that as STALKER ran on Vista, Win 7 64 must be the problem, so I reinstalled it.

No dice.

So, time to spot check for problems. Is it at all possible that my PSU is bugging out but still works with other games? Failing that, how do I go about checking individual components?

First things first, we need to find out what's actually causing the crashing. Best way to get an initial idea is to have a look at the BSOD.
To do this, go into Control Panel, System, Advanced System Settings, Startup and Recovery, and uncheck the "Automatically restart" box. Then try launching one of the crashing games- You should get a blue screen with a load of writing on; Post this, and we'll be able to get a better idea of what's going on :)

Some guy on another forum asked me to do this. I tried it; no BSOD. Same problem. Didn't get any replies after that though.

So you've tested everything?
You've run Prime95 and memtest to filter out if it's a possible CPU or RAM problem that could be causing the PC to boot down?

If STALKER is a RAM extensive game and yours isn't quite stable, it could possibly be a cause for it in particular when that game is booted up, compared to others which will mainly rely on the CPU and GPU.

Run memtest86 and prime95 for 8+ hours, this should show up any problems with cpu/memory. I'd also try a multimeter on the psu. Also try running with just one stick of ram. The fact that there is no BSOD would make me think that there is some sort of power issue, either the psu or mobo. Try putting the cpu back to stock settings. And of course make sure there's no kind of component to case electrical shorts.

Failing that you'll have to swap out components one by one with really cheap low end stuff until the problem is eliminated.

Run furmark and linpack (OCCT) and see if you can get it to crash

Could be worth doing something like this as a test. also memtest as previously stated just to rule out the majority of your hardware.

Also have you tried patching the games? stalker clear sky wouldn't work on windows 7 64 bit for my brother until i patched it up to date, not sure if it would cause restarts but if you can run all them other games especially crysis with no problems i wouldn't be so sure the culprit is hardware. Seems an odd problem tho as i haven't known a game to cause that. Perhaps graphics drivers could also be looked at.

Try prime95 Blend test, if it fails that within 2 hours, go into bios, and change the fsb termination to 1.6/7. do not use LLC (loadline). nb 1.34, sb 1.2, vcore 1.35 (for testing) mempry 2.08. The last three options at the bottom (can't remember their names) Normal, normal, compatible. Don't overclock until you get it stable.

Change the graphics to 100/101

this might be way of the mark but have you got the latest drivers ?

try going back a few and try it again,i had this kind of issue 2 weeks ago and someone said to try older graphic driver's and it worked.

it could well be the latest drivers you are using.

What are your RAM voltages? I assume that the 8G is 4x2G. I had to increase the RAM voltage significantly when I went from 2 sticks to 4 on my old p5b deluxe (I was running my RAM slightly overclocked though at 833 4-4-4-12.).

Patched, and tried with Vista 32with which it used to work.

I'll run Prime95 and Memtest later today. What is furmark and linpack?

Try prime95 blend test. i've got the same setup and had problems like you.

Remove 4 gig for testing.

Up the volts on the core to 1.35, ram 2.1, nb 1.36. fsb term 1.6/7
