Spot or two of rust on my bonnet

Hi all,

I drive an Audi A3 '06 plate.
I've noticed a few spots of rust on the bonnet, probably down to chips from all the motorway driving I do.

I've ordered some touch-up paint and lacquer to go over it. Do I need to remove the rust first? (surely this would continue to rust underneath if I don't?
If so, what should I use to remove it?

Cheers.

With all due respect I'd strongly recommend getting it sorted professionally.

If you manage to remove the rust (plenty of rust treatments available off the shelf in halfords) you will probably make it look worse with touch up paint.

I'm not having a go but you are going to struggle to get a good finish and damage the resale value.

Does the car have full Audi service history? Never know it might be covered by the Audi paint warranty?

Kind Regards

Alec

No, its definitely just chips from the motorway. You think audi is a no-go? I might just call them up for advice on it anyway...

Is it bubbling, or is it just brown bodywork as the paint's been chipped away?
I had this on my Leon and whilst I never got round to fixing it, I don't see why this couldn't have been solved with chips away or similar.

Paint warranty use to be 3 years and the anti-corrosion warranty 12 years.

What about anti-corrosion primer/undercoat finish, I know a friend who Audi bonnet had stone chips, & then the anti-corrosion primer bilstered & he got a free paint job, his car was 5 or 6 years old.

I have this problem on the Focus, the local ChipsAway franchise wont touch it, claiming industry standards have changed

The man recommended a full bonnet repsray at a professional paint shop, what for such a small area? Or just pick away at the surface rust with a razor blade and use touch up pens...No ta.

I've got a number of small, down to the metal rusty stone chips, none of them have spread over the years. TBH Stone chips are inevitable, the number and severity will vary with the amount and type of driving you do. Trying to keep on top of them is a thankless and endless task so IMHO forget about them until the point (should that point ever come) where you can justify getting the bonnet and front bumper sprayed.

I had a couple on my bonnet which were down to the metal, and were starting to go orange.

Stuck a blob of Bilt Hamber Deox Gel on each of them, covered with cling film and left them a couple of hours (you might need to do this twice if they still look a bit rusty after the first go). Came back, wiped the gel off and they were looking metal coloured again. Touched them in and they've been fine ever since.

The Deox Gel is pretty impressive stuff - only reacts with rust, so it's safe on paintwork. :)

Bit of a difference between Internet and Local :)

I'm asking about somewhere like Halfords/Audi/etc?
