Hey All,

For some miltary and air freaks amoungst us... :)

Saw this on the BBC website:

What China stealth plane response reveals about US

Thing about it is that the Chinese J 20 to me looks like the JSF (F-35)

Link Comparison:

F-35: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F-35_Lightning_II

J 20: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu_J-20

What do you guys think?? Shocking how countries not reliant on the US just get away with things like this, another example, is the Renault chinese spy up roar (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-12142299)

Because the F35 was first flown 5 years ago and the J20 is yet to make it's first flight?

Am I missing something or they do not look similar at all?

Having seen quite a few shots of the F 35 through development I personally think that it does looks alike a lot, when I first show it I immediately thought that looks like the JSF

Try comparing it to the Russian Sukhoi T-50. They're pretty much identical. Not surprising though that the latest fast jets all look similar. Even in commercial aviation, new aircraft are becoming more uniform externally, due to the fact that technology has pretty much peaked and everyone want the optimum design. It's not like cars where the designer has the task of making something visually appealing to a customer....these aircraft have the sole purpose of performing.

If you think that's bad, you want to see some of the blatant Chinese Car copies! Go Google Image a Chinese 'Geely GE' and tell me what you see? :D

Closer to the F22 with the twin engines, i think, in looks any way.

I'm not sure I agree about technology having "peaked". The main reason that all commercial airliners look the same is that it's very time consuming/expensive to design a new shaped aircraft and get it through all the strict safety tests etc. Also, a complex machine like an aircraft is 99% identical to the previous design iteration since it's simply too difficult to design everything new all at once.

I've heard a few academics recently discussing radical commercial aircraft designs. For example, the main fuselage of a 737 serves no purpose except to carry the passengers: it provides no lift at all. A novel approach might be to build a giant delta-wing and stick all the seats right out into the wings. There's no reason this won't work, it's just it'd take probably 20 years and trillions of dollars to develop it as a brand new concept.

Well "peaked" within the confines of money, naturally. I thought that was a given, otherwise we'd still be flying across the Atlantic faster than sound.

The point I was making is that across the board, new aircraft designs from various manufacturers look more similar than ever. These fast jets illustrate that perfectly, as do the 787 and A350. The untrained eye would be hard pressed to tell apart those two airliners from rival companies, but I bet those same people could instantly differentiate between a 767 and A330. Also flight performance and efficiency is closer than ever before, so without some radical, revolutionary and hugely expensive new technology coming to light, I think it's fair to say that design within the confines of our very conservative society has peaked.

J20 is actually suposed to be a really really good jet aparently able to out manouver an f-35

doesnt help if your dead before you ever see the other plane though

I'm not doubting you but do you know where you read that as I wouldn't mind a read? The J20 was supposed to be built to rival the now old F22, so would be a bit of a failure on the F35's if that's true. Obviously the F35 is a different class in every other respect.

They may look the same but I assure you that internally they are different. here is an example:

The Chengdu J-20 has a holographic HUD inside the cockpit.
The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II has it integrated inside the helmet.

The Lockheed Martin uses a HOTAS configuration for the right hand side controller stick but the Chengdu J-20 does not.

The aeroplanes may look the same due to the design being good with aerodynamics. I'm not an expert but the obvious is obvious - Read wikipedia lol.
