I was asked for help with signing up to Spotify last weekend.
  • A couple I know are keen music buffs, she particularly opera and classical, he more eclectic.
  • However, 99% of the time they listen together or just one at a time.
  • They each have a Smartphone
  • They also have some sort of DAB Radio device that claims to support Spotify usage that is connected to an Amp and high quality speakers in the living room.
  • They have WiFi in their home.
  • Initially they decided to go for a "Premium" account but they asked me about a "Premium Duo" account.
I have tried to make sense of the multitude of Spotify options but would appreciate help from someone who has been there and understands the options and limitations.

Essentially, they want to to be able to listen to Spotify on one or other Smartphone and also to listen using their HiFi stereo setup but never (or hardly ever) on multiple devices at the same time.
They would typically only ever use Spotify in the house, via WiFi.

Premium Individual (£9.99)offers:
  • Listen to music ad-free
  • Play anywhere - even offline
  • On-demand playback
Premium Duo (£12.99) offers:
  • 2 Premium accounts for a couple under one roof
  • Duo Mix: a playlist for two, regularly updated with music you both enjoy
  • Ad-free music listening, play offline, on-demand playback
The only significant difference for an extra £3 seems to be "Duo Mix" - is that it

What should they go for and what limitations are / would be involved?

The main benefits for Duo is that two people can listen to different things at the same time. It will also create the generated playlists - such as release radar and discover weekly - based on each individual user's taste.
For example, when I'm at work happily listening to Spotify I can sometime get rudely interrupted because my wife has asked Alexa to play some dirge that she likes.

But would there be any advantage in "Duo" if two people never listen to different things, on different devices (e.g. Smartphones) at the same time?

As a follow-up to that, how does Spotify determine whether you are listening on more than one device at the same time?

And as yet another fololw-up can one listen on different devices - one at a time? How does Spotify manage this?

If you are using an individual account, they only allow one stream at once. If you are listening on your phone and you then ask Alexa to play something, playback will stop on the phone.

Again, thanks for a speedy and intelligible (to a complete ignoramus) reply @Rilot.

I get the feeling that it would make sense for them to start with an "Individual" account and if that doesn't work satisfactorily to shell out the extra £3. I will probably have to get it all working for them anyhow.

Thanks again :)
