I need to get going on painting my case for the cooler master 2006 mod competition, How may cans of 400ml spray paint do you think i'll need to spray the sides and top of my case (a CM ATCS 201)

That's what id suggest anyway. a 300ml can of spray(Halfords car spray paint) paint only just covered one of my side panels. So I think 3/3/2 would be ok , seeing as your painting the outside so it will allow for a mistake or two.
I always like being on the safe side. Nothing worse then using up 2 cans of paint and realising there a big scuff or you've found a fingerprint in the paint.

On my android project test piece, it took 6 coats of white. That was without any primer, so i'd say 3 coats of primer and 3 of paint is a fair estimate.

Messiah - I'm going to be using a dark colour so hopefully wont need as may coats as you do with white.
So the next question - should i strip the existing paint away so the panels are down to the bare alu, or could i get away with just rubbing down the paint, giving a coat or two of primer then colour then laquer

I used the same amount of layers wit hthe black as well btw. I'd say take it right down to the alu. Might as well start from scratch, as if you leave the paint on, it might end up looking too thick and weird.

Me? Plasticoat. It probably didn' really NEED 6 coats, but I applied 1 coat, and used wet and dry to smooth it out, then another coat and more wet and dry. Rinse and repeat until i'd done 6 coats.

hmmm if go 3/3/3 that going to cost me £40 for the spray then the psint stripper and all the sanding gear tack cloths etc..
I thought spraying would work out cheaper than the vinyl i wanted to use but looks like it's going to be about the same cost.
Vinyl is much less hassle and nice and clean too lol!

If you go to Halfords they do deals on spray paint, IIRC last time i got some it was 3 tins for £10.
Vinyl might be easier but it wont be as fun to do and doesn't smell as nice . Plus you should get a good sense of achievement when it all comes together.

Was in halfords yesterday to get prices and no such deals.
Might just do vinyl for the mod comp then maybe have a go at spraying up the case at a later date

Sounds like a good idea, ive got to admit vinyl does look great. Is it easy to remove though if you plan to paint at a later stage?.

You can't use vinyl! Every time someone uses vinyl, RBCUSTOMS kills a kitten. Think of the kittens!

if your going to use rattle cans. id use nothign else but halfords to be honest !
and splash out on some nice prep materials too: alcohol, wet dry, scotchbrite and TACK RAGS !!11one one
