spreading thermal paste

Grain of rice in the middle, let the heatsink spread it. Don't spread it by hand, you run the risk of trapping bubbles.

Good luck spreading mx3 it's very different to mx2 far harder to spread.
If you do get some just use a blob in middle as described above and if temps seem average for that cooler and paste it's fine.

I think mx4 is easy to spread like mx2 and arctic silver 5 though and I used to be a spreader but now I am a blobber.

What about on a cooler like the Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus that has the heat pipes exposed at the base? I'll be using AS5 and was just gonna do the credit card or cling film spread..

If you put a grain of rice sized blob in the middle and get the heatsink to spread it, whats the liklihood of it completely covering the surface area of the CPU heatspreader and the cooler heatsink?

I remember being told that the hottest area of the CPU was the centre, so there was no need to spread it all over the surface.

Whether it is true or not, I always use the grain of rice in the centre approach. When you take the heatsink off, you can see it hasn't reached all of the surface, but temps have never been a problem for me.
