Spring snapped :(

I went over a speedbump tonight and heard a clunk. Drove a bit further and noticed a creaking/clicking noise on turning.

I drove half way home from work and pulled over to see that my driverside/os spring has snapped at the lower end.

I need my car on Thursday so its important I find a place to fix it tomorrow.

Frustrating thing is that I wanted to put an Eibach lowering kit on it but never did as its just Mondeo tdci estate. However since now I should be changing the front pair I wouldnt mind changing all 4.

Looks like I will have to settle for 2 standard fit ones due to my time restraint :(

Lol I realise that was a "Cool Story Bro" kinda post.

Just a little vent of my thoughts and frustration. Guess there isnt much anyone could add! :D

The odds of me sourcing and having 4 springs fitted in a day is slim :(

Lol two standard springs will be fine, it's not a precision driving tool, seems a bit odd to want to stick performance springs on, unless of course you frequent McD's car parks after dark to hit on the ladeez.

You're right really, but I was gonna run the car into the ground and wouldnt mind it looking nice in the meantime :) . It is a bit silly for an old grandadmobile though I admit.

Gonna be a cheap £20 spring being bought from Eurocarparts instead I think.

Same issue happened on my mothers corsa. Spring snapped and jutted into the side of the wheel. Didn't notice the spring had gone, but there was a strong burning smell of rubber, so car was abandoned in a car park until it could be picked up later (brother's a mechanic). Anyway when driving it back home in the evening, in short distances, there was still the strong smell of rubber and going through some puddles generated a lot of steam. Eventually about half a mile from home, the tyre blew out.

Eek. I guess Ive been lucky. I couldnt see any signs of that happening but Ill certainly be driving cautiously to a garage in morning.

Seems to be a common fault on these mk3 mondeos according to forums.

:p

Was it the front or rears? As you've said, ECP is your best bet if you need to pick them up tomorrow.

I'd forget eibach springs, just stick with standard. They're cheaper, easier to get quickly and you know they'll work just fine.

I've driven a considerable distance with a snapped spring. Hardly recommended but depending where it's actually broken it's also far from cause for immediate panic.

I don't see why you would put anything other than standard springs on it either, complete waste of time.

Also, put two on

You might be suprised...
My recent purchase...

B8s from Demon Tweeks, next day delivery
H&R Springs from Amazon, next day delivery

job jobbed

I did find out my Ibiza had a snapped spring about 8 months after buying it :p
Just an oddd clank every now and again, when we jacked it up a loop of spring fell out lol mustve been trapped under the rest of the spring whilst under compression/tension w/e

Meh.

I bought by Leon with a snapped coil. Did 120mph on the way home and 1000mi before I got it fixed :p

haha - looks like its a Ford thing.

My front near-side Fiesta spring snapped and wound it self down the arm bursting my new tyre with only a few hundred miles on.

It also bent my anti-roll link and now it knocks when turning right. Was very close to the brake pipes too - luckily no damage here.

Ive just dropped it off at a local garage who should be able to sort it today. I never asked much about price so hopefully they aint too greedy. While driving there the noise it was making was very worrying so I was turning very gently.

When I arrived at the garage I noticed the spring had wound itself further down than it was when I initially looked at it. So I guess Im lucky I havent caused any damage to my tyre or anything.

You've left the car at a garage with no idea how much they're gonna charge you?

Are you mental?
They'll probs goto ecp grab a cheap 20quid spring and charge you 100 then adding 2.5 hours labour as the "nuts were seized"

Good ocular mate :(

Ive used em before and they were quite reasonable. The mechanic wasnt there when I dropped car off so the receptionist just told me to leave it and she would call me later.

But it is a bit mental I suppose lol. Its just vital I get it fixed today and the garage is walking distance for me.

Snapped both springs on my Mondeo years ago after leaving it parked up for a few months. Replaced them with lowering springs and it was a lot sharper than standard.

Well I just collected the car.

I know it goes against all good practices but due to me just dropping it off without appointment and being strapped for time I just got the broken one replaced. The opposite side is untouched for now.

Cost me £75 supplied and fitted. Not too bad really.

This is becoming more common place and I'm putting this right in the remit of cheap parts and manufactoring. I've had cars for years, no springs snap... last three cars I've had (Saab 93 Aero, Miswubishi Carisma handy me down and RX8) have all had a spring go... pathetic... they making them out of plastic?

This is my first experience with it but on looking around the internet it definitely seems way too common on the Ford Mondeo mk3 at least.

It might be somewhat down to the increased number of speedbumps we all have to endure these days :(
