Tottenham Hotspur are reported to be lining up a move for Deportivo La Coruna midfielder Mauro Silva.
Several newspapers have reported the club are interested in the veteran Brazilian, although the move would go against Spurs' recent claims to clear-out their ageing stars.

The 36-year-old is out of contract at The Riazor in the summer and will be available on a free transfer.

White Hart Lane caretaker-manager David Pleat recently declared the club would not discuss new deals with any player over the age of 30 until the summer, with the future of Christian Ziege, Darren Anderton and Gus Poyet in question.

Spurs have been linked with several of Europe's top midfielders including PSV Eindhoven and Dutch international Mark van Bommel as well as Real Betis' Capri, both 26, while also keeping tabs on Brazilian starlet Diego

Typical of them, buying another over the hill player who will probably spend 3/4's of the season in the treatment room instead of on the pitch. He's still a good player, but really, what are Spurs thinking? They'll never rejoin the top teams unless they get good young players now, and turn them into great players as they get older. They simply don't have the money (as far as I know) to buy the players they need, and getting older players in won't help them.

No-way would we sign a 36 year old... unless he's a coach

Other names linked to not brought up here...

Van Persie
Reid
Dawson
etc.

Go back to worrying about relegation! Infact - we did have a squad full of 30+s and we still were never in trouble of relegation! ;)

Gilly ya cheeky bugger - just read the FULL article, the sentence at the end you conveniently forgot...

which makes the link with the 1994 World Cup winner questionable

You sound like you believe this is true

98% of transfer stories are pure nonsense and speculation, its barely even worth acknowledging stories like these.

Wouldn't have been funny then though ;)

errr... when was the last time we BOUGHT an over-the-hill player... Redknapp at 29? Our problem is we play the buggers that have been at the club for decades.

Redknapp at 29 who, when signed, we ALL laughed at and said he wouldn't ever be playing, yet Cem and the other spurs fans said he was over that now.

Seems not.

at OT it was obvious you like muscle in the middle of the park.

Glad you said park then :p (sure you didn't mean 'lack'? ;))

Well tbh it can't be any worse than their transfer policy since 2003: let all your experienced strikers go for 5p each (even in midseason) and then blow ~£13m on unproven ones. Then after giving one of them about 2 games, trade him in with a phat £7m cheque for another 1st division striker. Meanwhile leave your record signing and Champions League legend out on loan for the next decade or so.

Slight difference between Zamora and Jermain Defoe... disingenuous to suggest they are similar because Defoe had spent a few months in Division 1. In actual fact I'd rate Defoe good enough to go to Portugal - Zamora didn't show anything like that potential/ability. Good move by Spurs, cut your losses and buy a better player.

I'm not disputing Defoe is a better player than Zamora, I just think for a club like Spurs spending £20m net on strikers when they already had Keane, Ferdinand, Sheringham and Rebrov was a bit of a strange move - especially when no replacements came in until the summer, they were left last season playing midfielders up front cos they were right down to the bare bones after letting Ferdinand go midseason etc.

Personally I think Defoe was pretty expensive considering Zamora went the other way, and Postiga too - bearing in mind Spurs never play in Europe etc and arguably other areas of the team need(ed) strengthening more.
