It's been a long time since I've done this - I need to clean up a friends PC - I highly suspect its full of all kinds of nasties.

The last time I did this I used Spybot and Hijackthis. Are these still suitable? Essentially I just want to turn up with my USB stick, install them, give the PC a quick going over and go home.

Get Malwarebytes. The free 15 day trial of Counterspy is also worth running too.

Always good to also do the usual, spybot, ccleaner - very good :o, an anti virus scan and advanced windows repair - this is a piece of software which helps repair registry files etc but i forgot who makes it.

There's one, I cant remember what its called now, but it boots into safe mode and runs an extensive search and removal. Was linked on this forum..very good..

Superantispyware in conjunction with Malwarebytes almost all problems. Get your friend to start using Opera or Firefox + Adblock. If they insist on using IE get them to use the mighty Admuncher too.

My 'Kit' consists of:
-Firefox(With Adblock Plus+Easylist & Noscript): Safest way to browse the web.
-Spywareblaster: Adds a list of dodgey cookies to your web browsers 'block' list :).
-Spybot: To immunize against certain threat and for scanning
-Malwarebytes: Scanning
-Kaspersky IS 2009: Firewall & AV
-CCLeaner: Removing all the rubbish temporary files
