Spyro (the first game) need some help to progress. Do you need all the crystals?

We bought Spyro for my son in the humble bundle sale. He's now stuck on how to progress, he's found all the dragons and eggs on the levels available but now doesn't know what to do next?

Does he also need to get all the crystals to progess?

Rescue 10 dragon statues i think, did it the other day, then speak to the balloonist

Really fun and a steal for the price. Just a classic platformer with great graphics.
