Spyware protection

After mentioning on another post that I felt my internet download speed was being hampered by KAV. I was advised (after posting log) to uninstall Spybot Search & Destroy and Spyware Blaster.
I am happy to do this but would that advice have only been relevant if I had the whole Kaspersky Security package.
Sorry if I seem stupid but I would like to know if I would be safe if I only had the KAV 2010 which I have. Thanks

Spyware Blaster is a system hog. I have removed it from a bunch of client machines at work. I replaced it with Malwarebyte's Antimalware. It is free and nothing runs in the background. Just run a manual scan as often as you want.

EDIT: Spyware Blaster shouldn't be affecting anything speed-wise. All it does it change some registry settings to stop certain spyware work - nothing actively runs as far as I know. Though haven't used it for some years it may well have changed.
