Anyone know a rough figure on how much it costs, per user, to upgrade a SQL2000 licence to SQL2005.

Talking about 300 users, 2 servers.

I don't think there is an upgrade option for anything other than OS's with Microsoft. TO upgrade would mean to buy new licenses and media, which is about £3000 per CPU iirc. If you have two servers with 2 CPU's each, and 300 users, it would be cheaper to get the CPU licenses, as it gets cheaper for 2xcpu licenses at about 80 users if i remember rightly.

Yeah, sorry, perhaps didn't explain correctly.

By upgrade I meant if we went out today to purchase 2005 licences instead of 2000, what would the difference in cost be?

You can't buy SQL 2000 licenses anymore, you can only buy SQL 2005, but they are about the same price, and they are backwards compatible, so you can run SQL 2000 to your hearts content and upgrade when you feel ready.

Didn't realise. Thanks for that Baz, really appreciate it.

but remember, if you go down the CAL route, you need a license for every computer that could connect to the server. Not just the ones that will.
