Hi,

I'm looking at SQL for our server, but im not really sure as to the difference between the small business version and the non sbs version, as far as i can see the only difference is the price......

Can anyone enlighten me?

I believe the Small Business version can only be installed into a Small Business Server controlled domain.

Try Googling ‘Requirements for Installing SQL 2008 Standard Edition for Small Business’.

I've done a tiny bit of research on this in the past, and as far as I can tell, there is none. The only issue I found, was that because it has Small Business in the title, Sage refuse to support it, even if it's installed on a separate server as part of SBS Premium add-on.

I had heard they were identical apart from the name and the fact some software does not officially support it. Seems to mirror what other people have said in this thread.

Hah - I've had a tech support person at Sage recently tell me they "don't support RAID in a server"

Sage will not support sql on sbs, HOWEVER I have NEVER seen sage have a SQL issue... all sage issues are data related.... even if you send data to them it will be a sage back they will not know (or care) what its hosted on....

jsut dont tell them what its hosted on, you would not expect a accountant to know anything about the back end, I have never seen anyone have a sage / sql issue, and even if you did it would not be sages fault and not their remit to fix...

if its a big company with stacks of cash just get what sage tell you to, if its a smaller company install SQL express, and the SQL managment studio

its even debatable if you need to back up the SQL, since you only need the sage backups to restore sage..

I have restored loads of sage setups (after server failures), never used the server side backups (usually bhecause there were none) just the last backup the accountant made
