Looking for a bit of help here - I'm looking for an RTS game with the following features:
  1. Small, squad level of units
  2. No base building
  3. Single player only
Men of War Assault Squad 2 is looking favourite at the moment. I played (and really liked) the earlier levels of the original Men of War and Soldiers - Heroes of WW2 and AS2 looks like more of the same with better graphics and what looks to be loads of mods.

But....before I purchase have I overlooked any other possibilities?

the new steel divison Normandy 1944 might be worth a try, although I believe it has multiplayer and limited single player campaign, not sure what else to recommend to be honest

Men of War Assault Squad 2 is very good, you can micromanage right down to each individual soldier and SP is extremely rewarding to play and had me hooked. I wouldn't bother with Steel Division if you are not into multiplayer, the single player campaigns really disappointed me it seems like you're just fighting uncoordinated AI spam, MP however is great fun.

That's what I liked in Men of War/Soldiers - the ability (for example) to loot ammunition/weapons and reuse :)

Is either of the DLC essential or would I be good to go with just the main game (which looks to be ~£5)

Nearly 20 years old, but I still play Age of Empires II (single player). It's available on Steam so that you can play it in modern screen resolutions.

Lots of different scenarios and modes you can play, dictating how many buildings you start off with. There is also nomad mode where you start with 0 buildings and you have to resource up first. Various objectives too e.g. regicide (where you have to kill the opponent king), or build trade routes or capture all of the relics (treasures) on the map. Then a peace treaty which states how long you play for before a conflict starts. Then there is campaign mode too where you follow a set story.

For micromanagement, you press CTRL-1, CTRL-2 etc to assign your units (normally by unit type), then you simply press 1, 2, 3 etc to select them.

AoE2 originally had 1 expansion (called the Conquerors) but Steam have added 3 more. Well worth buying them all together to get the discounts. All-in, you have something like 32 civilisations!
