Square Enix hit Steam

Having recently moved house I managed to dig out my original FF7 PC discs and this thread has reignited my interest in playing - however, it is just unplayable in its original state on a modern pc.

People have discussed mod packs to help make things more playable- has anybody had any experience with these mods/addons? If so how did you find the game with them ? and any links/names please? :)

Cheers,

Just noticed a rather, shall we say "dodgy" combination of speech/text that can crop up in combat..

"Crap, they caught us with our pants down."
"Rear Assault!"

Yeah you gotta love the English dub on this game even if it makes me cringe. So glad that they have the option to have the original Japanese voices.

The only decent mods that I know of is this one program that allows you to replace the music and use the original PS1 version extracted as .psf or MP3 files. It can also allow for higher texture bit rate or windowed mode, though unfortunately these will cause major graphics faults i.e. black squares, FMVs will not play properly or the game will crash completely.

It really is just best to have an older PC from the Windows 95/98 era to play this, but it is more effort than it is worth. Otherwise its better to just play the PS1 version or use an emulator.

FFVIII PC version seems to run fine in Software Mode on modern PCs and even then you still get a few giltches or complete crashes here and there.

Well I tried to reinstall this game just to see if it will work. There are times where the game will work fine one day and another it just won't. But luckily, it actually works now. I looked up on that Hi-Res mod and it works perfectly fine. Just a shame that it only works in the battle scenes and not everything else. Pre-rendered backgrounds still look like crap but not a real big issue. Now I just need to get the "FF7Music" mod to work again with the PS1 PSF files. Can't stand the PC's crap MIDI music.
