I've booked my car in to get this noise checked out (when they open this morning) but just wondering if there is anything seriously wrong...

The Peugeot 106 has done just under 45k miles, and recently had it's overdue 40k service - in which I got the timing belt replaced.

Since then there has been a constant whine from under the bonnet - I took the car back to the garage last month and asked him to check it out, he adjusted the tension on the belt.

Still no joy - constant whine (not that loud but noticable) - I've no idea about the belts in a car, but there is quite a large belt which doesn't appear to be making the noise, in fact the source of the whine appears to be far away from that - towards the alternator I think (is that the "hub" type thing which has electrical wiring in and out of?).

Sorry for being vague but I'm not too sure about car mechanics!

Also... the exhaust back box appears to be getting louder, which apparently is due to parts inside it disintegrating. Is it worth while getting this replaced while it still works ok? would it affect the speed of the car by any chance as that has been noticably lower recently - as in I need to accelerate more than I had to before.

If tightening the belt doesnt help... it could be that (if the 306 has them) it could be that the actual Tensioner has gone, I was told that by my dad once before I got mine tightened..

This could be an electrical whine from a poor earth somewhere in the car. It can present itself in many ways including through the car speakers depending on where the problem is. I know a belt seems obvious although your alternator has a belt too, but the fact you've mentioned the alternator as a possible source could mean an earthing point has gone bad.

Car is just back from the garage now...

Apparently it's a clutch spring problem causing the whine, and that it's ok to keep driving on it until it goes (due to big job replacing clutch). I'm not too sure of the details as I wasn't there to hear the explanation.

Thank goodness I have an AA membership - the car is giving me nothing but trouble at the mo.
